hello all
i am a 41 year old who has been flirting with the idea of long hair all my life, but never managed to see it through...well enough is enough and i've decided to carry out my lifelong wish of being long haired!
I have thick straight blond hair but shaved it on june 10th and have since destroyed said clippers!!
Has any one got some advice for me to see through my task at long last?
Hey Rabbit great decision on growing your hair! My journey also started with a crew-cut and now 4 years later it's a bit passed my shoulders..The best advice I can give you is to have patience and stay true to your decision...Because, through-out your grow-out you will have days where you just want a change and desperate to cut it. Don't give in to the temptation-keep your long term goal in mind and it shall pass...You are starting a great point, all you have to do is just let it GROW and just don't fuss with it until you reach the awkward stage-then that's when hair products become your best friend...Good-luck to you!
Hey Rabbit,
it's cool being able to do something after so much waiting, yeah? :D The only real advice to give until your hair gets to some real length is to hold out on cutting it at the first sign of discomfort. The awkward stage is named for a reason, man; you won't know what to do with it when it's at a certain longish length, and all you can do is find inventive ways to keep it out of your eyes. I wouldn't advise hairspray and the like, as they can damage hair, but stuff like hats and bandannas can do you good.
С уважением,
Venya
cheers Venya...some good advice thanks.
Looking forward to finally becoming the person I was born to be!
Keep it sweet dude
scott
Rabbit, Good luck with your journey and like dee said just let it grow. No clippers, no scissors, no razors.
Through the awkward stage just envision what your hair will look like when it is shoulder length or longer and let caps and bandannas become your friends.
peace, jonalbear
thanks dude, I guess I'll bring out the hats and wait it out.
I appreciate the advice and support.
Laters, scott
You've already made the two most important decisions - To grow you hair and follow your dream, and to join this board, where you will get all the encouragement you need. Yes, as has been said, there will be bad hair days, the awkward stages, the snide remarks etc, but stick with it. Dreams do come true. Good luck. Ian
Well it appears Rabbit111 you will a great looking long head of hair as your head has nice hair now. Good luck in growing out your hair. Tom
Hey there Scott
As others have said, just stay away from trims - at times it will be tough, and at times you might need bandanas, gel or hats. I enjoyed my growing out and every wek brought a new look and more length. So just enjoy it and keep popping back here for advice and support. Welcome!!
Cheers Dave
Hello Rabbit111,
My key piece of advice that I could have done with waaaay back in the day would have - don't let the bad hair days get you down. Unfortunately, the nature of long hair can be that sometimes it can look bad everynow and then before it looks good permanently. Growing hair is awkward at the best of times, but also, it takes a while for someone who is new to it all to figure out how to deal with the new hair.
For example, when I started growing my hair I continued to comb it just like I did when it was only an inch long and with curly hair like mine that was not a good idea. I used to walk around school with the biggest, fluffiest Jew-fro (hope that doesn't offend anyone) ever! :) If I'd have left it well alone it would have not been the puffy mess it was.
Other than that, when you need some suggestions, say if you hit a snag (literally and figuratively) ask some questions here. There are plenty of lovely people here to help out.
Have fun mate!
Neil.
Scott,
You've been waiting 41 long years to grow your hair out?!?! :0 Oh, you poor, deprived soul; you must remedy this immediately!!!
But, seriously, if you have wanted to grow your hair long for your entire life, and there is no legitimate reason for keeping it short, then GO FOR IT!!!! In your photo, it looks like you have a nice head of hair to work with. And you said it is straight, which will probably be much easier to work with than curly hair. So it's mainly a matter of two things: 1) just don't get it cut, even in the "awkward stage" - just DON'T! and 2) take good care of it. If you don't take care of it, you will end up with split ends, and then you will cut them off, and you will lose all that hair and growing time. :(
The members of this board use a variety of products and/or oils that are not expensive, and they share what works and what doesn't. Just read some of the past posts.
I hope you enjoy your hair growing experience!!! :)
