hi everyone
I started growing my hear last month from shaved....(see previous pic posted 5 days ago)
but although i know im a long haired guy at heart...am i too old to start this process? Still got a little bit of conformity left in me I guess
scott
I am sure there are people much older here than you who started growing their hair in their 40's or 50's
like you, many of us here have been conditioned our entire life that we as men should have short hair even though there is no law(aside from fascist countries like North Korea)that mandate short hair for all Men.
break the conditioning that you've been indoctrinated with and let it grow!
Great Scott! I should say not!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :)
You obviously didn't get the memo, so I shall summarize:
If there is a legitimate reason to conform to something (such as safety regulations), then do so. If not, then break the shackles and be who you really are. It is OK to start out slow, to feel a bit apprehensive -- after all, this is unfamiliar territory. Just remember to remain true to what is in your heart.
I have great news: life *starts* at 40!!! So, technically, you are only one year old, definitely not too old to start growing your hair! ;) You only live once, Scott, so GO FOR IT!! If YOU really want it, then do it -- do it for *YOU*!!
Scott,
I am the same age of 41 as you are and am in the active process of growing out my hair. Never too late and if you feel long hair is for you then go for it!

and just let nature take its course. My ponytail is well over 3 feet long now at age 58. I say !@#$%^&* to conformity.
Scott
I just started regrowing four-ish years ago when I was 49.
You'll never have more life ahead of you than you do at this very moment. How authentically do you want to spend the rest of it? When it comes to a close, you will not regret the things you had the courage to do, but the things you were too afraid to try.

As an elder statesman of "Long Hair" there is only one answer - NO!
Hi Rabbit111, I'm 67, and I don't think you should worry about conformity, so live your dream. Ian
Ian, you're a true inspiration. I hope my hair can look half as good at yours when I'm 67. If you don't mind my asking, is your ancestry partly or fully Native American? I've always been envious of the incredible hair that most Native peoples have.
Hi Jason and many thanks. I think it's just incredible how much inspiration we can give to each other on this fantastic board, and how much encouragement we can give to Rabbit, and all our new friends who are starting out on the journey of discovery that comes with growing long hair.
Funny, I have been asked before about any Native North American Ancestry, and sadly, I have been unable to tace any. I am told that my surname is derived from an ancient Anglo-Saxon word meaning warrior! but that probably applies to a whole bunch of Anglo-Saxons!
Regards, Ian
Hey Scott,
I just started growing my hair out from a guage 4 buzz cut four (4) months ago. I was 55 years old then. Check out my four (4) month update pics from July 9th.
Grow your hair! Go for terminal length! If your conformity should bother you just jump on this hyperboard and you'll get all the encouragement you need to keep growing. You're a long haired bro. Don't let the short hairs make you cut your hair. You're one of us now, bro.
Raymond
Hi Rabbit111,
There is no age that is "too old" to start growing long hair! I had relatively long hair for most of my life, then had short hair for a few years from 2000-2004, then started growing again in early 2004. I will be celebrating my 58th birthday in just under a month.
I would say go for it, and all the best in your long hair journey!
Good luck,
David
You are never too old and Validus's response is right on target: start living the life you want to! I grew mine long in the 70s and have had it long since. I just turned 60 and cut mine to a better looking (not ratty) shoulder-lenthish cut a year and a half ago and I still enjoy it long. I feel better than ever! Go for it!
Just wanted to thank everyone for their encouragement and support on this question, and I am now starting to realise that long hair is a state of mind and indeed a calling too!....feeling lots more positive about my journey now, and know it is what i want to do.
Keep it long all!

I had long hair since 10, wore it short for a few years then at 45 I wanted my hair back. Got it back and I love it, just avoid all trims and tuff it out during the awkward stage and you will get there.
Love this board
Hi Rabbit,
I thinks the only time your too old to grow your hair out is when your hair stops growing out of your head. lol....
So just let it grow man....!
Glinka
No way! NEVER too old to start. At your age I was staying around Mid-back. And then for an experiment (to see how long it would grow) just let it go. Here it was at age 60 and just 2 weeks before a Salon demolished it because of idiotic stupidity. And then later because of surgery to save my life, the long hair was done-in and looked too shabby. From now on I will keep it "Longish" and a bit wild, but I can always say I knew extreme long hair and it was GREAT! :-)
In case you are interested in a video I made when it was at its best, here is the one I put on You Tube. Hope this helps to confirm in your mind. All the best-
Justin~

Hey Justin,
That picture is so inspirational! To achieve such excellence at age 60 offers concrete proof that having long hair is not only for teenagers and those in their 20s.
I admit to being a bit saddened that you don't want to grow it back to that length but I certainly respect your decision.
Best,
Jason
I've beeen with a 'New Age ' philosophy since I was 19, The Seth Books by Jane Roberts, and they say basically you create your own reality through your beliefs. You're supposed to turn your attention away from what you don't want and concentrate on what you do desire. Your concentration is the creative force itself, supposedly. Even if you don't completely achieve your desires, just the act of Trying, in and of itself, is healthy. You should always try to see what you want happening. Life comes from within. Try to see what you want in a way that's believeable to you, until you really find yourself expecting it. It's just being true to your own desires and self fufillment.
As long as you have hair, you're not too old to grow it.
When you don't have any more, you're too old.
Age-schmage - just grow it, Scott!
From your other post, it looks like you have a great start.
Onward and Downward!

Hi Scott,
41 is not too old to start... but also 51 or 61 or 71 or 81...
Look at this man:
http://www.lapoliticaitaliana.it/img/620/20101205_22598.jpg
This man is Marco Pannella, one of the oldest Italian Politicians (Radical Party). He is... 81 !
No!
I don't think you can be too old to start wearing your hair long, if that's what you really want to do. I didn't let the idea that I'm in my late 50s even cross my mind when I decided to go for it; and I guess I was right, because I'm happier now than I can remember being in a long time--because I did it for me.
