hello all,
i have started growing my hair from shaved (see previous threads) and was wondering if anyone had any advice on optimising hair growth, been researchin Biotin and some studies show positive results.
But i figured you guys would know best and have the best advice,
cheers
scott
dont grow up....grow down instead!!
There is no way to speed up hair growth. That rate is determined by your DNA and cannot be altered. It's about half an inch per month on average. HOWEVER... you can take steps to keep your hair healthy and minimize breakage. If you lose less, you will retain more length, resulting in the perception of faster growth.
I'm not familiar with biotin, but if it's like any other product, it depends on the individual. You have to experiment and find what works best for you.
Good luck!
Great Scott, I love your closing phrase as maybe that should be your trademark summary for all future threads:)As for the Biotin I have been taking it as a supplement for close to a year and have to say the jury is still out if its helped me or not. However it hasn't hurt anything so I'll keep using it.

cheers Mark....i'll give it a shot, nothing ventured......!
Glad you like my sign off....seems apt!

ps...dont grow up...grow down imstead!
Michael, below, is right--you just have to experiment and as a sample of 1 you really don't know if it worked! I use a number of supplements, given in the web page below. I am more concerned with not losing my hair and having healthy hair rather than trying to increase the growth rate.
Amino Acids for hair growth
Hi Rabbit, Like Hairball, I've been on a daily dose of Biotin for the past few months and again had no adverse effects. It is said that Biotin is an important part of hair care, and the good thing is, it's faitly cheap - at least from UK health food stores. Ian
hi Ian
thanks for the advice, think i'll give it a go, will be reporting on results very soon hopefully

Hi Rabbit,
As one of the board's proponents of biotin, I will state that, in my experience, it can SLIGHTLY increase hair growth rate, and SIGNIFICANTLY reduce shedding. My hair seems to grow approximately 1/8-inch faster per month while supplementing with 1 to 2 milligrams of biotin daily. I have also noticed far fewer shed hairs in the shower and brush while taking it. Biotin is quite inexpensive (I can get more than 2 month's worth for about $7 USD), and as it is a B-vitamin, it is water-soluble, and therefore any excess you may consume will simply be excreted via the urine.

Biotin is very inexpensive, about $5 or less (US) for 150 tablets, 1000mcg (1 mg) each. It is advertised as being good for skin, hair, and nails (I can vouch for it making my nails stronger/healthier), and is a main ingredient in the more expensive formulas that claim hair/nail health. 1-2mg per day is plenty. As Val pointed out, it is water soluble, and the body will excrete any excess (if your urine is bright yellow, you are taking too much of some supplement, and basically wasting it & money; just reduce the amount ingested). Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble, and will build up in your system; all others are water soluble and excess will be excreted. Whenever you are considering supplements, it is a good idea to do a little research to learn 1) if you could really benefit from it, 2) any side effects and what to watch out for, and 3)not only a good price, but a high quality item for a reasonable price.
I have had very good luck with these companies:
Mountain Naturals of Vermont (a.k.a. Food Science; some hard-to-find items)
Puritan's Pride (high quality, great sale prices)
Genesis Nutrition
Also many major retailers have a variety of items, but the quality and price differs.
