I'm thinking of getting a haircut, not a "Let's chop off my hair" haircut, but more of a restyle type thing. I'm considering getting it layered again or maybe doing bangs or something.
I'm kind of thinking of going with a sort of 80s metal do, opinions?
This is a question that can only be honestly answered with another question. It's the same answer I'd give if you asked if you should shave your head:
"Will you be happy looking like this?"
--Val
I can answer that with a question: "Will it suit me?" I'm vain as a peacock and looking good is rather important to me.
Speaking strictly superficially, I suppose this look would suit you about as well as it suits the guy in the sample photo. That said, I believe that the suitability of a person's outward appearance is largely dependent upon that person's inner nature. If the way you LOOK on the outside accurately portrays the way you FEEL on the inside (without causing harm to yourself or others), then I'd say it could be regarded as a "good idea."
Generally speaking, though... yeah, I think it could be a cool look for the right person.
--Val
Not to counter what Validus said, but I think you look pretty good the way you are - your fine flowing hair matches the slim contours of your face quite well. That isn't to say, though, that you can't mix it up and try something new and get a whole new look. One of my most memorable 80s metal hairdo bands come out of Japan, "X Japan" - give them a Google image search if you want to see some eye-poping 'dos!
Anyways, good luck on whichever route you take!
Sincerely,
yoshiki
I'm a huge X Japan fan actually heh
For the life of me I can't imagine why you would want to - or even consider - changing your hairstyle, as it looks absolutely fantastic just as it is. Many guys would give their left $%# to have your hair.
As is, I think your hair to be very well suited to the contours of your face, and just stunning, overall. In my opinion, I prefer it how it is, rather than the 80s glam metal look. Ive provided my personal opinion above, but as Validus and others have said, it is your choice, how you wish your hair to be.
С уважением,
Venya
Personally I like the look - go for it!!
Charley
the person in this image looks like an androgynous faggot. Is that the look your going for? James/Tampa,Fl
James, you need to lighten up.That's fine if you don't like the look but if a guy has what it takes to pull it off then I salute them.I'll leave it at that but show some respect.
Mark
I agree with Mark, below. This community is not the place for hateful speech and ignorant judgmentalism. We are here to support men in the growing of long hair and the honest expression of self.
--Val
Well it's more the look I'm going for than close minded bigot.
James, was it not you who lamented going into an upscale deli and having the 'yuppies' there take one look at you and come to an immediate - and negative - conclusion? Having borne the brunt of this thoughtless and ignorant attitude yourself, why are you subjecting someone else to it? You know firsthand how hateful and hurtful that felt when others did it to you. Why are you continuing the cycle of negativity by inflicting it on someone else?
And, no, the man in the photo does not resemble either a cigarette or a meatball. ;)
I sorry for that really inappropriate comment i made, i will be more tactful in the future. James/Tampa,Fl
Perhaps a little more tackful might be better in future!
I will be more tactful in the future , I'm sorry I went off. and I sorry for making that comment. I'll keep the negative thoughts to myself. your friend James/Tampa,Fl

Please no 80's mullets isn't that against the law now? lol
Ahhhh, does that bring back memories of seeing metal bands from the 1980s:)That guy kind of reminds me of the band Cinderalla. Now I just saw your pic, in response to Val, and personally I think your hair looks awesome just the way it.The look in your example would be quite a change. However its what makes you happy and if you like that look then why not do it.You can always go back to your original style if you decide its really not for you.Back in the 1980s I went crazy and permed my hair which was a big change for me.However I only tried that once and eventually let my hair go straight again.I'm posting an example of that perm:)Ha Ha! Anyway your a good looking guy who I think could pull off that look.So the balls in your court now my friend.Good luck and if you do it I can't wait for the update pics:)Cheers
Mark
I think you're hair looks fantastic now, however it is your hair.
Whatever floats your boat is what you should do.
Should he follow the two week rule before taking the plunge on this?.
That "Rocks "
I can't say whether it would be a good look for you or not, but I would suggest thinking long and hard before such a change and if you decide to do it, try doing it in steps rather than all at once. I've been watching a lot of retro video's lately and every time I start to think bangs might be cool I see several examples that change my mind. So if you do this, be very specific with your stylist, and preferably have some good examples of what you want to show them. Nothing worse than thinking you're going to end up looking cool but instead end up looking like some of the bad examples I've seen.
Good luck in you decision!

My Facebook Page
Hi Mr D, Think about it long and hard. Then, if you still think it's good idea, go for it. My personal opinion for what it's worth - Your hair looks amazing already, build on what you have. Ian
I don't like the look at all but I respect your right to wear it if that's what you want to do.
Is that a girl or a guy?.... nevermind back to your question, I have to agree with Ian double think it before you do it.
It's a guy, it's Michael Monroe the frontman of the band Hanoi Rocks
Do what you want to do -- be true to yourself, as Validus and others have suggested. I went from kind of ratty mid-back all one length to a sort of shoulder lengthish kind of bob cut and I really like it. You have to have some nerve to go out on the frontier of long, styled hair on a guy, but it can be fun. I have not gotten any negative comments and in fact have gotten some complements. Mostly, most people really don't care!
I concur with others. Your hair as it is now is very nice. however It is yours to do with as you please. I presume you are aware of the care and feeding of such styled hair. It seldom looks as pictured without a staff preening over it before the photo shoot. Wind, humidity, and/or just a good nights sleep will alter the look. However you choose, the wonderful thing about hair is it will evolve.
It seems a very silly idea -especially when you post what appears to be a picture of a woman as an example. I hope that is not the style you of which are thinking.
You are your own Authority. If it's good for you that's all that matters. Also, you're so young, it doesn't really matter, you've got so much time ahead of you for it to keep growing & changing. Experience as much as you can, as soon as you feel like doing something. Better just do it if you want it.
GrandD, considering everything you have shared about yourself -- photos of yourself, your personal style and attitude, and your youthful age -- I vote HELL YEAH!!!! You are still young enough to get away with more extreme hairstyles, so do it whlie you can. Trust me, the world will suffocate you soon enough, forcing you to look and dress a certain way just to get a job... You already have the attitude that 'fits' this style -- in other words, this type of hairstyle would be an outward expression of who you really are. Someone who is insecure or unsure about sporting this look does not have the attitude to pull it off. You not only could wear this look, you could OWN IT AND ROCK IT!!!
However, the haircut in the photo needs to be modified a bit. I say keep the length in the longest, bottom layer of hair, and cut the bangs and sides longer than the photo -- it will be more versitile (and you can always trim it a little bit shorter if you like -- always start longer and trim as needed, don't just chop it too short to start with). Take several photos to your hairdresser, and be *very, very* specific and watchful about how much they trim -- hairdressers are known for chopping wayyyyyy too much off. Your hair will not look exactly like ANY photo -- so just use the pictures as a general guide, and just play with your hair untill you figure out how to style it the way you like. Using the right products is important too; certain products are strong enough to hold long hair in a liberty spike (for example), while other products will work well for less height. This is going to require more time, maintenance, and $$$ (for products and trims) than your current hairstyle.
Are you planing on coloring your hair too?
------------------------------------
Since all this hair stuff (cutting, coloring, etc.) is only temporary, and you can always grow your hair out again, I say GO FOR IT! However, if at any time in your life you are considering something permanent, such as tattoos or piercings, that is when I advise thinking long and hard about something before doing it.
Well your at a good age for experimenting with different looks and hairstyles - better to have a go at something then not try it at all.
I've had everything from a shaved head, through to crewcuts, mullets, cropped hair to pixie cuts. Been there done that and now just enjoying long hair. May as well try it out, and your hair will grow back in time if you are not happy with the way your hair looks.
The best way to learn is to try it out. Biggest regrets in later life is not doing the things you wanted to do when young.
Above all have lots of fun :)
Duncan
It's a lousy idea. This kind of hair band 1980's style looks attractive on nobody as I see it. The best long hair is total long hair throughout. I do like metal music too but 80's metal is just gay.
Gay as a pejorative isn't really something I appreciate hearing, my little brother is gay, and frankly I like 80s metal.
Hmmmmmm, you appear to be in agreement with James?See below.....
I see nothing "Gay" about 80s metal as I lived through that era and felt it was a great moment in the music industry.Metal was mostly underground until more bands made it mainstream.I was sad to see the party end as what's out there today is not all that great in my opinion.I go to far less concerts today than I did back in the 80s and the ones I usually go to are reunions of those old metal bands.Sadly many have cut their hair but fortunately the music still sounds good:)Cheers
Mark
Judging by the picture you posted below, I think that style would look amazing, you definitely have the face for it, go for it if thats what you want.
cheers Dave
Yes! Go for it! 80s retro is totally cool! It's big here in the UK.
I saw the pic of your hair as it now is. Awesome but predictable. I think the 80s style would give it more body on top, the bangs (fringe) would add drama - and it would look more interesting overall.
A LOT more work though! Be prepared for more maintenance. ;)
