Hello Everyone, I am Michael's Brother, Chris. He posts here from time to time and told me to check out this board.
For now, I still have your typical basic guys haircut. The more I see Michael's hair get longer, the more I like it. Thus I've decided to try it for myself.
I have thick blonde straight hair. Any newbie advice I would appreciate. Thanks for your time -Chris-
Welcome.
There is plenty of advice here, just read the FAQs and many of the threads and things will become clear.
Hi Chris, and good to welcome another potential longhair. I'm sure your Brother will give you some good advice. The important thing is, you've made a decision. Now you need the long term commitment to get through the bad hair days, awkward stages, snide remarks etc. But, it's all worth it if long hair is your goal and this board will help you along the way. Good luck. Ian
Hey there Chris,
Glad to see you've decided to grow your hair out.
First of all, you have great hair for growing out and I can imagine it looking awesome once about mid-back length.
You will find that during the awkward stage (about 1-2 years of growing out) it will look messy and you might feel tempted to cut it. DON'T. It will only make it worse and prolong the awkward stage. This is also the part of the process where family and colleagues are most likely to complain about your hair. Just ignore their comments and keep growing knowing that it will soon be over.
Cheers, MitchN
[During the awkward stage, if it looks shite, you're doing it right!]
If you can wear hats, scull caps, bandannas etc. try to stay away from chemical goop. try and keep the knots out at all cost.I read this somewhere." treat it like its fine antique lace". when you have a bad hair day and you will have many. use the 1 month rule.if you get the urge to cut it wait another month, well you get the picture. James/Tampa,Fl good luck if your interesdted in some photos i found a website, he took monthly photos from 8 months to 63 months littlebirdlonghair.com
+1 on wearing hats and beanies, definitely helping me right now(im in the akward stage)....that is a great site even tho everyone hair grows at a different rate, you get an idea of how long it will take for your hair to grow long, But i believe it is www.littlebirdlonghair.moonfruit.com (you forgot the "moonfruit" part.)
Good luck with what will, I am sure, be a worthwhile journey.
Advice - be gentle with your hair as it grows. Ban scissors from your house. Be patient. Enjoy!
Hey Chris,
Welcome, Dude!
I'm glad that welcome you to our fraternity of Long hairs.
I'm sure that your brother, Michael can help you with advise. Please consider us on MLHH to be part of your family as well. We'll be only too happy to help you with advise and encouragement in growing out your hair.
As your brother can tell you, there will be "bad hair" days and there will be slurs and snide remarks directed toward you as you go through the awkward phase. Don't let the small-minded, shorthairs dictate your life to you. You're a longhair now; be strong and perservere. Don't even honor the slurs and the snide remakes with a comment. Just give them a distainful glare.
Keep your hair clean. Until you reach three (3) to four (4) inches I would suggest that you shampoo every other day and on the non-shampoo days just wash with water. when you shampoo use an organic shampoo without harsh chemicals. Stay away from scissors.
Enjoy the journey, bro. Celebrate each of the milestones as you reach them. Don't be a stranger to MLHH.
Raymond
Some good advice there!
Don't forget to use conditioner when your hair gets around 4-5 inches! I'll also add that even if you hate your hair some day, and think it looks like a piece of crap... Just forget about it. Hide it under a hat, scarf, do something fun with it as long as you don't cut it. If you stick with it for long enough, you'll one day find yourself proud of your achievement and happy with you hair (hopefully).
Also, i know that some people are against this, but i would recommend you to trim your ends just a tiny bit (half an inch or less) every 6-8 months or so, even while growing out. Your hair WILL look better by doing this, and you'll probably get less tangles. If you buy a good pair of scissors (the ones designed for hair will obviously be the best choice), you can do it yourself or ask a friend.
