I've been "trolling" on this website for the past few weeks, trying to decide if it's worth it to grow out my hair. I've seens tons of great photos/progress photos of guys growing out their hair. I've always wondered to myself how I would look with long hair, my ideal length has always been shoulder length. The only problem is that I've never gotten past the awkward stage due to the fact that my hair type is extremely strange. I was not able to bear it anymore and decided to cut it (picture posted is about 5-6 months growth about 3 years ago). I have VERY thick dry frizzy hair, which is wavy/curly and decides to grow in any which way it pleases which makes it look very unappealing. This is why I've always wished for thin staight hair. Anyways, the reason why I'm posting here is because I would like to listen to your advice and thoughts as to if it would be possible for me to grow shoulder length hair with my hair type. I'm afraid it will grow into a great heap of frizzy/curly mopish mess. I sport a #1 buzz all the time, the girlfriend loves it, the friends love it, and the family loves it, they all tell me long hair doesn't suit me. What do I do? Any comments would be appreciated.
Hi Bry, and thanks for posting. As you have been browsing this site, you will know that most of us are dedicated lomnghairs. You seem keen on gowing you hair out, so you should go for it. Family, friends and partners may be against it, but it's your choice - I'm sure you don't dictate the styles they should be wearing! But it is a long and sometimes hard road. Bad hair days, awkward stages, criticism are just some of the down sides. The upside is that you will attain your dream of freedom, individuallity and choice to have long hair - if that's what you want. Good luck, Ian
hello Bry
thanks for the post......it seems to me that the only problems about growing your hair are other peoples' opinions, personally this has always held me back too....but thanks to this hyperboard i now realise that it is MY hair and MY decision......you want to do it so go for it dude.....i started from shaved 8 weeks ago (see recent post pics) and know you will get all the support and encouragement you need here.
Best of luck dude....you are a born longhair!......go for it!
Scott
dont grow up...grow down instead!
There's only one way to satisfy your curiosity, and that's to give it a try, but you need to commit yourself to getting past the awkward stage in order to give it a fair chance. If you can get past the awkward stage into actual "long" hair, then you can decide if it's what you want. If you like it, then you're on your way, and if you decide it's not what you really wanted you can always cut it shorter again. But if you never try, you'll always be wondering.

You have beautiful hair, if you want to grow it shoulder lenght then by all means do it. You have to do what you think is best for you. Good luck in your hair growth.

After reading your comment and the responses you've gotten so far, I agree that you can't just take somebody else's word for something like that. They can all tell you long hair doesn't suit you, but do you think it does?
My dad was the world champion at telling me what was "right" for me. I'm talking everything from what I majored in when I went to college to how I wore my hair! It really hurts when I look back at quite a bit of my life and think of the things I missed because I let myself be influenced so much by his controlling attitude.
About three years ago, I got one of the worst haircuts anybody had ever given me. That's been my last one until today. After thinking long and hard about it, I decided to let it grow out the way I'd always wanted to. Yeah, I have disapproval every now and then, but I could care less. I'm happier with myself than I have ever been and it doesn't even cross my mind to cut my hair simply because someone that I might not even know gives me a dirty look because of it.
My wife is totally cool with it and is happy because she knows that I am. It was a long road getting to the freedom I feel today, but it sure has been worth it.
Cheers,
Steve
Amen, Steve! Being free to be yourself is the best feeling in the world! :)
It has to be your commitment and decision but your type of hair looks excellent when long - worth dying for in fact. Good luck if you go ahead, you would not regret it.

You must ignore the social pressure to conform to what society thinks is normal, women can have long hair and men usually shouldn't. going against the norm is technically deviant behavior. IGNORE that shit and grow it out, get past the bad days, take care of it and just be happy in who you are. good luck bud. James / Tampa,Fl
Thanks for the encouraging comments guys, I will let my hair grow out throughout this upcoming winter. I think long hair really suits men, if I had staighter hair I would always sport the long haired look. I've never grown out my hair in my 19 years of life, you only live once so you might as well do things you want/always wanted to do and not be afraid! And I think now's a better time than ever, before male pattern baldness kicks in haha. Almost every single male in my family is bald except for my father who has a full head of hair, go figure.
Bald guy wanting to go long haired,
Bry.
Hey Bry,
Go for it, Dude!
I have a name for you: Benjamin Franklin.

hi and welcome, from the pics I can tell your hair is not so bad, you should see mine it is very curly and crazy looking. curly hair looks crazy for the first few months but the settles down and looks really nice. check out this pic of a member on this board(I dont have permission to post it but im sure he wont mind)
Hi, I have similar hair to yours. I wear it long, and, true to what you think, it grows every which way. BUT, woman, even those who doesn't like men wearing long hair, loves my hair. I often get remarks from woman like: "I wish I had hair like yours"!
Grow it, and then see if you like it. To add: I wash and condition my hair every day. If you want to grow it long, keep it clean.

I wish I had your hair to be honest, you can do much with it once its longer. Hell, you can even straighten it if you really hate the curls (although I don't see why). But really I have same problem with my sickly thin, badly damaged hair and everybody telling me how awesome I would look if I had short hair... but I am keeping it long for the time being. Although it should really be your personal choice of course, I'd grow it if I were you.
