What type of music do you listen to?
Everything with a guitar in it, but I listen to metal (folk and black are my favorite genres) most of the time.
Same as Vincent with some Black and Death metal thrown in. I have a wide appreciation of music apart from Country and Western and Rap with a "C"!
Cheers,
John.B
What no Punk music?
no Ramones, eh?
I listen to everything with a guitar in it, so punk is one of them! I listen to the Ramones sometimes but they are not my favorite. Punk Rock is my favorite, I used to listen to a lot of bands like:
Anti-flag
Dropkick Murphys
Agent Orange
Blink 182
Flogging Molly
NOFX
The Offspring
Green Day
Sum 41
Bad Religion
Dead Kennedys
Heideroosjes (very famous band from Holland where I live)
Nowadays I don't listen a lot to these bands.
old school hip hop
underground rap
reggae
and sometimes the doors and pink floyd
Sometimes classic rock, sometimes light jazz, and sometimes classical. Although most of my radio time is spent listening to our local National Public Radio station.
I have a wide appreciation for almost every kind of music. My favorites include the fields of contemporary Christian, '60s music classics, country rock, R/B, soul, etc. I really love groups and vocalists like Sugarland, Aretha Franklin, Matthew Ward, etc. The list is really wide and varied.
Ive been really getting into really heavy metal from Scandinavia and the eastern block, and the Balkans. James/Tampa,Fl
You probably know of Morbid Angel and Diocide too, right? ;-)
I like morbid angel, haven't heard much about diocide. the point im am discovering really hard heavy metal from countries i never expected. i will be 52 next month and i still love the traditional metal bands, but my friends from the UK to points east have some really good bands mostly unsigned and fairly only known within the there perspective countries. i find my metal taste are going to the very extreme recently, i went to a live show last night here in Tampa , i only saw three of the main stage ,the line up that i saw was megadeath, godsmack, disturbed.
take care James / Tampa,Fl
That's another very cool band! One thing I've noticed is that both bands you suggested have female lead vocals. That's not too common in the metal world but they are out there.I give them credit to take on that form of music.Cheers
Mark
True, but it's becoming more common in Rock music in general and since you mention Metal bands don't forget about Flyleaf's lead singer.
here's another band you might like if you enjoyed Theatre of Tragedy
Lacuna Coil
I have heard of Lacuna Coil before but don't know much of their music.I have to comment that some of the guys in the band have some questionable hair styles!LOL.
while i can appreciate there more women getting into certain genres of music, im talking about death metal and women just cant pull it off. look up amon amarth on you and you see what im saying. James / Tampa,Fl
Quite a broad spectrum. Dependent on my mood or the type of ambiance I may be setting up. Jazz, Blues, Classical, Rock, Big band, Country, etc. Music ,to me, is a tool box, and I use whatever tool is needed to do the job.
Glad to hear you don't fit the stereotypical Long Haired Male
anyone listen to Indie? Goth? Punk?
Agreed. I have been getting into stuff from the 60s and 70s lately: Folk and rock from that era--to the point of buying the blu-ray of the film of "Woodstock"--as well as songs from everybody like Sugarland and the Kentucky Headhunters all the way to people like Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, etc. Love good, polished vocalists like Streisand and Neil Diamond; folk artists like Ellis Paul and almost any work by Beethoven. Just about as eclectic as it gets, but I get into a bunch of different stuff.
Long hair music.
Dude,I love them and what beautiful hair too:)They sound awesome !Cheers
Mark
Sure beats Three Doors Down, doesn't it? ;-)
Basically it boils down to what sounds good to me.As long as its melodic, keeps me interested throughout and doesn't put me to sleep I'm fine with it.So mostly its rock or metal for me but I'll listen to other types too.Cheers
Mark
Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque. Heavy on the lute. Sufi, Eastern trance music, chant.
Hey there
i listen to the stranglers, the doors, neil young, sting, kasabian, madelaine peyroux.....anything but country really i suppose.
Scott from nottingham
I'm waiting to use a meeting room at a big library that has a nice upright piano in it. I'll be practicing my music for the next three hours, slightly less.
I like harpsichord music. I have a harpsichord in storage that needs work to be playable again. I like Bach, Scarlatti, Handel, Baroque music in gneral, Early & Ancient music, such as the English Virginalists like William Byrd. I play Bachs' scores of chamber music from other composers that Bach re wrote for himself for harpsichord, to have music to play for entertainment and to study what others were doing.
I want to play for income someday. That's what I'm getting ready for. I can improvise Medieval and Japanese music, and wrote a small simple country dance in 18th century German style.
I'll be running through Pachelbels' Canon in D, The beginnings of Bachs' English suite # 2 & 3 & 4, some parts of his Partitas, A Goldberg variation or two, Some Scarlatti, some works from the Fitzwilliam Virginal book, some Sweelinck, etc etc.
I have a big book of Irish music, lots of jigs, reels, etc. that just have letters for the chords that I improvise with & they really draw people. I play with the door open and some people wander in. One wants me to give lessons. Several said my music moved them to have a fresh desire for life, basically.
When I watch videos, or other people play the radio around me, I listen to anything, except really nasty stuff. I like interesting harmony. I like trippy stuff. I like some music from the 90s. My favorite sound is Renaissance instruments and voices, and anything like that. That would be no vibrato, strongly different sounds, multiple melodies all going in different directions. I play lots of Bachs' fugues for that reason.
Fun question! Thanks!!! - John C
Impressive, John! Are you classically trained?
Thanks! Yes, I suppose that's what it is, though I trained myself with library books, books I bought, and musicians & teachers I'd question through the years in my wolf like desire for the knowledge! ;p
Sounds like you might have an interest in Early music? Can you play or anything?
Any type of rock. I hate classical music, too many classical
music loves trying to shove their musical preferences down my
throat. Read: relatives.
I don't know of any rock fans who want to shove their
preferences down my throat but for some reason clasical music fans
fell the need to convert people to their choice in music.
Any kind of music which has either has a good rythmn, melody, lyrics and plenty of heart!
I like anything from instrumental classical music through to rock n' roll. Folk /Irish/ Rock / and a little bit of heavy metal and Blue Grass country music. Genres to fit whatever mood I am in.
Pretty much any kind of music with the exception of the highly negative Wanksta Rap & Hip Hop which I deeply loathe and despise.
Not a big fan of that 'gangsta' stuff myself. too misogynistic and negative in general for my tastes.
I don't care for Limp Bizkit or Eminem either.
not all rap is negative, you just havent heard the right stuff, i think your talking about radio rap which is trash. check these guys out
I agree with you that not all hip hop or rap is bad. The ones where the lyrics have a positive vibe or social message are OK. I was only referring to the pretentious & puerile gangsta rap hip hop genre which unfortunately seems to dominate the air waves more then it deserves! However I cannot relax to this kind of music as a lot of it is going at like 100+ words a minute and is highly repetitive. However one man's music is another man's noise! Different strokes for different folks eh!

1970s progressive rock, electronica (especially Vangelis, Synergy and the Berlin School), some new wave and synth-pop
...no metal, sorry!
Have you Heard of Ladytron? since you're into electronica and synth-pop and mentioned New Wave you might like them.
Hey Yadgar, have you checked out Wobbler yet, very good prog.
~ Dave
High!
Oh yes, I've read about it... something with "burning Hammond organs in the snow"... I really should check them out on YouTube!
(some minutes later... listening to "In Orbit" from their recent album "Rites At Dawn"!)
WOW!!! Classic Yes, albeit somewhat softer, sometimes also sounding like Gentle Giant... can't believe that this is from the 21st century! The mellotron... the Hammond... but the singer is really no Jon Anderson!
Probably I will not afford Yes' current "Fly From Here" album - according to most reviews it's only a pale shadow of former splendour... (and in fact mostly a 30-years-delayed Buggles album!)
See you in Khyberspace!
Yadgar
I like all kinds of music with the exception of rap. If any of you are classic rock fans, you might really enjoy this band. They just won a contest and made the cover of Rolling Stone. They have 3 albums out and they are all excellent. Hope you enjoy and great question.
The Sheepdogs- Who
Not bad.
sort of a cross between the Dead, Guess Who and maybe some other period bands.
definitely sounds straight out of 1971 from what I've heard from that era.
The Sheepdogs are heavily influenced by the 1970's in both sound and look. They are the first band that does not have a contract with a record label to be on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
Heavy metal.
Mostly classic rock, 80s music etc. I like some Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden but that's about as far as I go into metal territory. Sometimes I listen to 40s/50s type music. I also enjoyo classical piano on occasion (Chopin being my favorite).
Chopin is buried in Paris in the same cemetary as Jim Morrison. I've been to both grave sites. Interesting how Morrison's grave is more of a shrine, while Chopin's is respectfully left alone.
I'm a hardcore classic rock and metal fan. Not talking about the 90's thrash metal or screamo but stuff like Metallica and Megadeth. I don't mind classical or jazz but I can't stand the c(rap) we have today. Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, any of those wanna be gangsters (I talking about you, T.I.), Pitbull (shiny head and aviators make you look like a cock), etc... you get my point. It's a crisis in the music industry. You clearly don't need talent to make popular music anymore (**cough**Rebecca Black**cough**).
-------------------
seriously these new pop artist give hip hop a bad name, its the un-heard of artist who make good hip hop. infact some is so good, that if the music industry gave them a chance they'd make millions, But the new generation isnt interested in good lyrics they just want Justin beiber
Almost all types.
Hello,
I listen to a lot of different music. You can view some of the music I listen to here:
http://www.last.fm/user/narkins
Unfortunately, the program that gathers this info for me has recently broken, so it hasn't been gathering info from my ipod. This is just mp3s obviously. I spend a lot of time collecting and listening to physicals as well. Mostly I listen to progressive rock from the 70's, contemporary jazz, classical, various "sub-genres" of metal, folk. All sorts really.
Neil.
Well almost everything except the extremes of anything. From my early years as a club DJ to my latter years as a presenter for a local Radio Station, I have acquired a catholic taste :-)
Smooth jazz, classic rock, 70's & 80's music, and some classical.
I go through periods of diffrent styles, but here's some of my favorite bands/artist:
Black Sabbath
Ozric Tentacles
The Cure
Depeche Mode
Kraftwerk
David Bowie
Joy Division
NEU!
CAN
Tangerine Dream
Aphex Twin
Sonic Youth
King Crimson
Van Der Graaf Generator
Genesis
Robert Wyatt
Led Zeppelin
Rainbow
Red Hot Chili Peppers
John Frusciante
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
Miles Davis
Herbie Hancock
the list goes on...
Classic hard rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, art rock, jazz-fusion, electronic music, ambient, alternative rock, post-punk, gothic rock... I love experimental and "alternative" music, music that sounds like the artist had a good time doing it and music that makes you feel the same feelings that the artist felt at the time of writing it.
Music is pretty much what makes my LIFE!
How could i forget these?!
Frank Zappa
Captain Beefheart
The Beatles
The Doors
Bauhaus
Alice Cooper
And more, and more...
Original lineup of Black Sabbath back together. Story at:
www.metaltalk.net
Mostly rock music, usually heavy or progressive, but not really metal as such.
OTOH, I also like Irish trad.
Louis Armstrong said that there are only two kinds of music: good and bad! His music was definitely in the good category as well. I listen to a lot of different genres.
Everything!
I'm a musician, and like most true musicians, I like music from all genres.
I admit that I usually gravitate toward hard rock/metal, but I also listen to country, classical, and just about any type of music you can think of. I even enjoy opera from time to time.
