Just wanted to know if you guys have noticed more longhaired men in new ads in various magazines. I get this magazine called Details kinda like GQ only lot less expensive for a subscription, well in this months issue there are plenty of long haired men in the ads. It could also be the September issue since I am just now receiving it. You guys may want to check this out. Keep Growing your hair. Tom (Hairboy)
I have noticed an uptick in the prevalence of long(er) haired men and boys in print ads and in commercials, Not always the mid back or longer, though there are a few, but definitely more with shoulder length are showing up. Even in as diverse as an ad for motor oil, in which all the characters in the ad were longhaired men.
Yeah, shoulder length is now mainstream fashion here in the UK. But longer hair (mid-back) is still restricted more to the goth/metal scene.
Of course, as always, fashion affects big cities more than the suburbs or countryside.

Yup, long hair is simply in fashion now. It started coming back into mainstream fashion (as opposed to just goth, metal, etc.) a few years ago here in the UK. Note Russell Brand, Noel Fielding and others.
It's the usual cycle. 80s styles are totally in right now. Long hair fits in with the skinny jeans, studded belts and other trends revived from that era. The ads in mags are simply reflecting the reality on the street.
I just dread when the short-haired 90s come back into fashion eventually ...

I thought the 80s were short-haired and the 90s were more like no-haired! I suppose it depends on your definitions, and where you were at the time, but I think long hair was mainstream mostly from the late 60s until 1976, when punk made long hair seem suddenly unfashionable to many, and that said, most didn't really go beyond shoulder length when they thought they had long hair.
Really long hair on guys has always been just for a few of us statistical outliers, but it does feel more socially comfortable when there are at least a lot of guys around with hair to their shoulders.
Yeah, I think you're correct overall - but retro trends have never been known for strict historical accuracy. I think the long hair trend today is a nod to famous big-hair bands of the 80s - such as Bon Jovi, Guns n' Roses, etc (rock but more mainstream rock). And since retro doesn't pretend to be accurate, the retro trend is a sort of mish-mash overlap of both the 70s and 80s.
At any rate, the long hair trend today is definitely retro-based.
I really only decided to grow my own hair because it's now in fashion and cool. And I don't want it much more than shoulder length. Yes, I am a sheep! :)
(But having said that, I do love my hair now and I'm tempted to let it keep growing.)
