Anyone feel any tremors today anywhere?
I heard the quake was felt up and down the entire U.S. east coast especially in Washington D.C and the New York area.
-----------------------------
There is a very simple explanation as to why.
The reason the quake was felt over such a wide area ia due to geology. The East is on solid bedrock, for the most part. Solid rock can very efficiently transmit seismic waves over a great distance.
Here in earthquake country (California) the rock is much less solid and broken up with many voids caused by multiple faults. When seismic waves cross these voids (assuming no triggering of movement on faults being crossed by seismic waves) there is a considerable attenuating effect on those seismic waves. If there are several parallel faults being crossed by these waves, the energy gets absorbed in a much shorter distance than through solid bedrock.
I am real good when it comes to science.

I am from Cali and lived right on the San Andreas Fault in Lake Hughes. I now live in Rocky Mount, Va. I felt yesturdays quake and to me it felt more like a 4.5 would feel in California which explains what Scott is saying. There was little or no damage around here just peoples nerves. Tommie
I felt it while sitting and working. Our building swayed several times over several seconds. Colleagues who were walking did not feel it. We are in NC.
Felt it quite well in my office (on the third floor) in southern Maryland.
