I feel I've unexpectedly reached a whole new stage in long hair: I've been asked for advice. That officially makes me an "old pro"! :)
In my first post on this board I mentioned that instead of the barrage of "get your haircut" comments a few months ago, I was now getting one or two nods of approval. (http://www.mlhh.org/messages/283410.html).
I've now reached a new stage! One guy I hardly know smiled to me at the drinks machine in our office and asked for advice. His hair is over his ears and he has a tiny ponytail at the back. He's getting a bit frustrated at how long it takes to grow.
He asked me how long it takes. I said he had to be patient as hair normally grows only about half an inch a month.
He then asked if trimming would make it grow faster. I said that was just a myth and to not even think of trimming it.
I felt kinda proud! But hope I gave the right advice!
Damon
a real old-timer now eh?
You must feel very proud, I can't wait to get to that sort of stage...well done dude!
Scott
Thanks, Scott! Yeah, it felt like a real milestone. I've only been growing my own hair for about 20 months so I did feel proud!
It's particularly nice to realise that at least a few people in the office (it's a HUGE open-plan one) actually admire my hair instead of hating it.

Thats cool Damon, I'm not sure if anyone really notices my hair and then I get a barrage of comments too, even from two girls in the local supermarket, and both positive, so yeah there is light at the end of the tunnel :)
cheers Dave
Yeah, that seems to be happening to me too! You reach a stage where it's nice not to get all the negative "get a haircut" comments but then you get silence and get slightly miffed that no one seems to notice your hair at all.
Now suddenly, I'm realising that people DO notice. As well as the dude at the drinks machine I got another reaction. I came in from my lunch break during a wet and very windy day looking like Cousin It - my hair covering my face. A girl laughed (in a nice way) and we shared a few jokes. In fact, all sorts of girls in the office who ignored me before suddenly seem to have become very friendly.
I changed my whole image at the same time as growing my hair - lost weight (back to 30" waist), wore cooler clothes (skinny jeans, studded belt, etc.) - so not sure what it is but something seems to have paid off! :D

Indeed, you did.
Phew! Glad I got it right!
Hi Damon,
Isn't that cool to be asked by others having shorter hair than yourself for advice:)You see, from where you are currently and going backwards,is in the history books for you making that period known territory. You can share that early knowledge with others who have yet to begin their journeys. The longer you grow the more information that can be handed down. You advice was correct about trimming as it doesn't make hair grow faster. It only slows the journey.Great job my friend.Cheers
Mark
Hi Mark,
Yeah, it is cool! It made my day!
Thanks for confirming my trimming advice. I read that somewhere.

Hey Damon, glad to hear about your good experience. :)
It's always nice when instead of ridicule you get a positive reaction or even someone asking about it. When I was staying in California this summer I became acquainted with a young marine soldier who was stationed in Camp Pendleton and one day asked me how long it took me to grow mine (I'm still growing but it's long enough to be noticed now), and said that as soon as his tour was up he was going to grow his out too (which came as a surprise to me, albeit a pleasant one!).
Hi Damon, it's great to hear some good news for a change about a positive attitude towards long hair from colleges at work etc and I hope that it's not just here in the UK. I don't suppose there will ever be universal acceptance, but we can live in hope! Good luck, Ian
Hi Damon,
Congratulations to you on this stage of your journey, and cheers to you for encouraging another guy in his own journey. Be sure to keep it growing!
Keep it growing,
David
