I was also wondering if anyone knew of any other good hair-related songs like this? The song is just as much about general counterculture but the hair still plays a big part in that, being in many ways an outward expression of it even today.
Happy trails everyone.
Ha Ha, we used to have a member here named "Stormy"who posted weekly hair related tunes from various artists.I don't know where he found them all as many I've never heard of until he posted them. They would be available for download for the week as the next week it was a different tune.Unfortunately it eventually ended as I wonder what happened to him.

I think I saved at least some of those
I believe I saved everyone he posted and put them in my itunes library. When I shuffle the songs on the ipod I have to smile when one of his pops up in the rotation:)lol.
I'm old enough (and embarrased to say) I remember Little Jimmy Osmond and the "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool" - Sorry! Ian

I seem to recall there were others but i'm drawing a blank on them right now.

Yes, I heard this song many times when I was in college (about 25 years ago) where many of my fellow students had long hair. It resonated with me because I was trying to grow my hair out. There wasn't any MLHH, Google or WWW in 1986, so I didn't know about the messy hair stage and that it was TEMPORARY. During the summer of 1985, I caved in to pressure from family to get it cut. Next year I let it grow again into the messy hair stage. For some reason, I got a lot further into the messy stage this time (maybe my hair was growing faster). By Spring Term 1986 I wanted to cut it, but seeing other guys on campus with long hair, playing frisbie barefoot in cut-off jeans, tie-dye T-shirts, and hearing songs like this persuaded me to not go to the barber.
To me, the long hair in the song is a symbol for non-conformity to societal norms. During the 1980s the mainstream society was telling young guys to wave the flag, go to church, say "no" to drugs, get an MBA, get a haircut, work for a big corporation, get married, settle down, buy a big house in the suburbs, a Porsche, etc, etc, etc. BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO BECOME A YUPPIE. And I don't think I was alone, either.
Sorry about the long boring personal story. To answer your original question, some songs that explicitly mention long hair:
The Beatles - "Come Together"
Charlie Daniels Band - "Long Haired Country Boy"
Climax Blues Band - "I Love You"
The Cowsills - "Hair"
Five Man Electrical Band - "Signs"
George Thorogood - "Get a Haircut"
War - "Spill the Wine"
But many other songs don't specifically describe long-haired men, but have an implicit long-haired guy in them (often the singer himself, or songs about hippies and flower children: Scott McKenzie "San Francisco", Led Zeppelin "Misty Mountain Hop").
