hi guys
im at the 3 1/2 month stage from shaved, and starting to have thoughts of the usual back and sides again.....I always cave in to such thoughts...hence my short hair at the moment! But I could do with some inspiration to assist me this time please.
Have any of you felt like this when you were growing your hair out?
Scott
Hi Scott. Well I'm sure everybody has been in this position many times. I know I have. Over the years, I have had mine cut short for many reasons and always regretted it. It's a long, hard road to long hair, with many obstacles along the way - pressure from others, bad hair days, awkward stages etc. At the end of the day, it's your choice, but if there is a long haired dream inside of you, think very carefully before taking any drastic action. Put the 2 week rule into operation and see how you feel after that, and most of all get inspiration from this board and. Good luck. Ian
these are the first doubts i have had, and I can't wuss out at the first sign of trouble....shall continue on my growing journey to longhairdom!!
It's reassuring to know you have had these doubts in the past too....somehow easier to accept the feelings and move forwards
Many thanks dude

Scott,
If you really need "inspiration", your heart isn't in it.
I NEVER EVER felt like having a short "back and sides" even when my awkward stage was at its very worst. I just looked at the DE-inspiration - all the boring clones around me. Yuck! Did I REALLY want to go back to looking like them?!
The very word "cut" made shivers run down my spine.
I've seen your pics. You have a healthy head of hair and AWESOME POTENTIAL to look truly cool. You can just continue what you're doing (just wear a beanie if the awkward stage gets you down) and achieve a really awesome head of hair in a year's time - or you can just wuss out yet again and blend in with the unimaginative clones.
Come on, Scott. Buckle down, pull yourself together and achieve something that a huge percentage of men (balding or too timid) can only dream about!
Yeah, a lot of guys may outwardly pretend to sneer at dudes with long hair but have you any idea how many of them are secretly just jealous and would really give anything to look like that if only they had the self-confidence or weren't balding?
YOU have the ability. Go for it! Or spend the rest of your life wondering how it COULD have looked and kicking yourself.

hey Damon
Great response thanks!....and just the one I needed!
Just at the fuzzy hair stage and need to remember IT WILL PASS!
You have helped lots with your talk and will continue just as a promised myself this summer, no time to wuss out now!...or it will never happen
cheers

When I decided to grow out the hair again, I had not had long hair for about 15 years. At the time I had just joined a blues/ rock band after a while of not playing. I wanted to fit in to the band's image, and got encouragement from the rest of the guys. I resisted the urge to cut by saying to myself "I'll think about it next week", which is the same as I said to those who suggested I trim it.
To be honest I had enjoyed a good short back and sides- well done it can be cool. But the growing out phase was my barrier to long hair, which isn't to say it's that bad for everyone. This is the hardest phase for me, but after that you're into new territory. Resist trimming too, you will see the results all the quicker.
Possibly you could gel your hair back in the awkward flyaway phase.
Good luck!
Andy
Hi Andy
thanks for the tip of "i'll think about it next week"..that's a great technique that i'll emply now!
And also the no trimming rule...I must admit it would seem strange when the hairdresser always tells me it will grow quicker with regular trims...not possible methinks!
Cheers much
Scott
Don't give up now, Scott!! You're doing great so far, and you have fantastic hair to work with! Everyone goes through the awkward stage -- the operative word there is "stage," as in: it won't last forever. As with any goal you set for yourself, there are times when achieving it is easier, and times when it is harder. Would you give up on other goals you have just because you reached a difficult few months to get through? NO! So don't give up on growing your hair either! It's all in the attitude - if you act uncomfortable or self-conscious, you will be perceived as such. If you act sure of yourself and happy to be growing your hair, you will be perceived that way. If you don't like the way it looks during the awkward stage, try different products to help tame it, or wear a hat or bandana. Or just let your hair do what it wants and let your freak flag fly!!! :) :) :)
Well said!
as usual you make perfect sense...anything worthwhile should never be easy!
Properly galvanised now for my next few months growth (update in 2 weeks)

Hi Scott,
I can honestly say when I began my longhair journey, which was like back in the stone age,I knew what I wanted and never wavered from my goal.Of course I did experiment with different lengths of longhair over the years but now I just never cut it and let it do its own thing:)I feel I'm at terminal at the moment.I hope you achieve you longhair dreams, whatever they may mean to you.Just keep us posted and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask because we are like family here:)Cheers my friend.

Keep chuggin along along Scott! Your last update looked great - It will be well worth the effort.

Lots of the lovely English goth ladies prefer the longer manes. I encourage you to let it grow!
Hey Scott, unfortunately this is just something you'll have to tough out. Everyone who grows their hair long goes through this phase where it is poofy and weird. Other "fun" milestones are when your bangs are long enough to get in your eyes but not long enough to stuff behind your ears, and when it starts looking like a quasi-mullet as it first begins to reach the shoulders (if you start from an even shave like I did originally). As others have said, now is a good time to experiment with hats or hair gel if it really starts to bother you. Don't worry, after the first year/year-and-a-half or so it works itself out and then it's smooth sailing from there, and then in a few years you'll have awesome long hair. Best wishes.
