Hi there rabbit,
I have a totally different viewpoint to share about your cutting concern. Some here might strongly disagree with what I'm about to say; but let me explain my thinking...
When your hair is as short as yours currently is, there is nothing wrong with deciding on a trim to re-shape it into a more appealing look for yourself. Although I personally like your current "shaggy" look, if looking at yourself in the mirror is driving you totally nuts, this does NOT mean you will completely fail as a future longhair if you trim just a little now.
I for one would be lying to you if I didn't admit to trimming a lot during my own early stages of growing my mane long. The trick is to know when to STOP trimming, to control one's own obsessing over how one looks during the infamous awkward stages -- but a small degree of re-shaping your hair during the earliest stages of growth will not kill you nor ruin your chances of ever becoming a full-throttled longhair someday...
Honestly, I speak from experience on this subject. Please don't worry over the little things -- including a little trim now & then, if that's what will make you feel better... It just might eventually give you the courage to go a little longer between trims each time, next time, and to ultimately grow your mane out your own way. That's the method that worked for me, anyway, when I first grew out my own hair as a "virgin" wannabe longhair a long long time ago.
"Onward & Downward!" (even if there's an occasional little nip & tuck at the ends now & then!)

thanks for your thoughtful and informative comments.
I must admit, I did have a bad weekend concerning my current length..and I think I have found the perfect solution......I shaved my half-goatee off!, this has given me a change that does not effect my hair growing at all.....and now ill re-grow my facial hair for a month or so, by which time my hair will be a little longer and look different!
A crazy solution but whatever gets us through the awkward stages eh?
I will also embrace the freakiness of my shaggy hair untill it smooths out (laura's advice),.
After all, if long hair is my goal, then letting it do its thing is the key I think.
You have inspired me to keep it growing dude!......and did get a compliment at work on Monday, which always helps.
Cheers Ken
Long ain't wrong! :)

Hi there rabbit,
Hi again Scott,
I really like that idea, a very clever solution indeed! Reminds me of when I impulsively cut my hair short back in Y2K and deeply regretted it, I decided I needed to change my full beard temporarily into a goatee, because the full beard reminded me sadly of my long hair that was suddenly gone... Hey, whatever gets you though the hard times is absolutely right!
Take Care,
Ken
Hey Rabbit,
When I was growing my hair out, I actually kept the back and sides short while letting the top grow for about 6 or 7 months. Kinda like an undercut. Once the top part reached the top of my ears all the way around, I stopped cutting the back and sides and let it all grow out from there. A lot of guys on here HATE HATE HATE any form of undercutting, but it kept my hair looking halfway decent and controllable while it grew out.
Cheers element
I have thought of doing this, but actually i'm starting to get used to my hair getting longer on the back of my neck and i like it.
What is very useful is the support i get off this hyperboard from you guys...and i'm looking forward to the time when i'm really one of you.
