I just ran across this on youtube and it has inspired me to grow my hair long!
now, any subculture whose members are this happy and inspires us to grow our hair long is a positive group in my book!
what do you think? are you put off by goths like other members of society are or more inclined to want to join them or are you indifferent towards them?
Goths Make Better Lovers (2003)
No self-respecting goth would label themselves but I hang around with a goth crowd and get labelled as one by other people - so I guess that should give an idea of where my sympathies lie.
But I think you should grow your hair long only because it's something YOU want to do, not just to fit in with a subculture.

P.S. Not all goths have long hair - or black (my own is natural dark brown). It's a personal choice, not an initiation ritual. ;)

I'm not in the least put off by goths, even though it's not my personal style. We make a choice to have long hair, and they make a choice that includes more than just long hair. I don't want to join them, but we have in common that we're we're willing to be unconventional to express what's true to ourselves.
Hi Xstatic, Goths are on the whole a pretty cool urban tribe and I would have more time for goths then I would for anyone who identified with the hip hop rapper homeboy "culture".
I admire Goths because they are often very interesting people to converse with, are generally quite intelligent, free-thinking and creative souls. I think the notion of romance in life is important to goths and some mental escapism into a rich fantasy life is a way of coping with an often highly impersonal rude and commercial world which is often banal.
I do have some goth tendencies (more love of occult fiction and non-fiction, antiques, churches and graveyards) and like to dress in dark casual clothes often black without being as obviously ostentatious as the goths on the youtube. I do admire people who can dress well with some classic originality and steampunk is in my view a cousin to the goths. Thanks for posting the youtube video of Goths make better Lovers. A great little mini-docu and the goth couple featured were great company.

I kind of identify with the Goth subculture myself. I wear black almost exclusively, and include skulls and such whenever I can. I don't wear makeup or dye my hair (I did that once though), but I have been labeled a Goth from time to time. Unfortunately, there's a lot of people that lump Goth and Emo into one group, but I pay them no attention. I know the difference and from the conversations I've seen on this page, so do most longhairs.
I don't think admiration of or interest in the Goth subculture should be a reason to grow your hair. It might be a good motivation to get you started, but you ultimately have to stick with it for your own internal reasons. It has to be for you, and you alone.
