Hey Guys,
I'm in Maryland for some self care and for some courses. I don't have regular access to the internet. However, I wanted to connect with my long haired bros and get some advice.
Tomorrow will mark my seventh month mile marker. It will be seven (7) months since my last haircut. On Mar. 9, 2011 I got a gauge four (4) buzz cut. My hair is now about three and one half (3 1/2) in. long. It is long enough to cover my ears. I can pull the hair over my forehead down to the middle of my nose. The hair at the back is just starting to touch my traps. It is curly and I am definitely in the awkward phase. I am just starting to be able to finger comb the hair in the back.
Until now this has been my hair care routine: I shampoo my hair on the even numbered calendar days. On the other days I simply water washed it. After my shower I combed the wet hair back. In about thirty five (35) minutes I brush it back. That's it. At this point I intend to switch up my hair care routine to the following: I will shampoo my hair and condition it on Wed. and Sun. On the even numbered calendar days I will water wash and condition. I have purchased a coconut milk sulfate-free shampoo and a coconut milk sulfate-free conditioner. The combing and the brushing routine will remain the same.
I would appreciate comments and suggestions from my brother long hairs in regard to hair care.
I would also appreciate any suggestions in regard to what to do when short hairs make fun of my hair and tell me to get a haircut.
Thanks guys!
Your long haired bro,
Raymond
Hey Raymond
great to hear from you again, can't believe it's 7 months already!
I don't really have any advice for you at this stage as I am only 4 months from buzz cut tomorrow!
However...your choice of shampoo and conditioner is a sound one!...i also use sulphate free products and they really help stop my hair drying out while cleaning it adequately at the same time.
Also...thanks for your support bro' over the past 4 months of my journey...I am really looking forward to your 7 month update photo.
Dont grow up, grow down instead!!
Cheers
scott
Hey Raymond! congrats on 7 months, hope to see pics soon. I myself haven't touched my hair in 3 months and it's grown pretty nicely. I too am in the "awkward stage" so I have attached a picture so you can see what my hair looks like. I think for the awkward stage I manage pretty well (at least for now lol)
Anyway onto my routine:
In the mornings my hair is usually curly and very dense and sometimes stands. I'll usually start off combing w/ a wide tooth comb (while it's still dry). I'll do that for a few minutes and then it depends:
- If it's manageable, then i'll just brush it w/ a boar bristle brush (makes hair SO soft).
- If it's still rough and looks messy, i'll put on some jojoba oil and add a bit of water. I'll use my wide tooth comb and style as needed.
Regarding my washing routines: I try to never shampoo, because I don't know any good shampoos that don't have SLS. I'm searching, but anyway I shampoo once a week, usually on Fridays. I condition either daily or every other day. Once again it depends on how my hair is. Keep in mind that sometimes humidity can effect hair and therefore you will just have a bad hair day no matter how hard you try. I also use Garnier Fructis hair serum which makes hair shiny and softer. It's made from mostly oils so it's okay to use.
Never ever use hair straighteners. They are the reason why I had to cut off two years worth of hair growth and start from scratch.
Also regarding people making fun, keep in mind mosto f them are jealous. Believe it or not, having long hair is actually healthier for the scalp than having short hair and it also helps prevent baldness. Be proud and ignore the haters.
Hope to see those update pics soon. :)
Isaac.
Hi Raymond. Hair care is always a debatable subject and does depend on your hair type. In an attempt to keep as natural as possible, I tend to only shampoo my hair once a week - with suplphate free shampoo. Then mid week, I was either just with water, or a light conditioner.
Sometimes people ask me why do I have long hair, I simply ask them, why do they have short hair! In other words, none of their damm business. It's my choice! Regards. ian
