When I mentioned my upcoming hip surgery, some folks asked for updates, so here it is so far. Had the surgery yesterday, a hip replacement on the left side and a core decompression on the right. So far everything seems to be going well, other than normal post-operative pain. I should be going home tomorrow or Saturday, with about a month of a recovery phase where I'll be using a walker and/or crutches, and then a physical therapy routine for a little while.
And just so hair is involved a little bit, the anesthesia people requested I trim my beard down to a short goatee to enable the oxygen mask to fit better. So now I get to grow that back again.

Hey, Frodo,
Glad to hear your surgery went well. Here's hoping you have a speedy recovery without any complications.
Glad to hear it went well.
I remember hearing at one time that someone your age would be considered too young for a hip replacement, because they wear out and it would have to be replaced again later. If I remember right, I think you have a grandchild (?) but you aren't much older than me, and I'm in my '50s. We have no grandkids so far, our kids are in their teens.
Hopefully they have improved the wear rate on these things since then. Also, I'm pretty sure that life expectancy has improved so much since then that if they didn't improve the wear rate then it would still be a problem even if they only did that procedure on much older people.
Hope this doesn't put off our younger longhaired members. They'll be thinking that long hair is only for granddads with hip replacements! Hey, at least you're hip! (Bad joke, stand by for much groaning)
I'm in my late 40's and yes, I have a grandson. In my case the need for the replacement is because of a condition known as 'avascular necrosis' or 'osteonecrosis', where an insufficient blood supply causes part of the bone to die, in my case at the top of the femur where it connects to the hip. There are several possible causes, but my docs haven't nailed one down specifically.

Glad to hear your doing well Frodo. Wishing you all the best as you recover. Thanks for the update.
Hi there Mr. Frodo,
So glad to hear that the operation went well, and that you're now on the road to recovery. Interesting about the beard having to be trimmed -- I'm just glad to hear they didn't ask you to have to trim your hair!
I wish you a complete and full recovery, and hope that your new hip will work like a charm!!

Hi Mr. Frodo,
That's great the surgery went well and that you only had to sacrifice some of your beard instead of the unthinkable.Fortunately beard hair grows back fairly quickly so you'll be back to your original length soon I'm sure. After all you have gone through it will be worth it being you'll walk much easier than before.I assume you had trouble walking before the operation.Anyway a speedy recover to you and enjoy the rehab:)
