Hey MLHH,
As the post indicates, this is an introductory post from an aspiring long hair. I actually frequented this board quite a bit about two years ago the first time I attempted to grow my hair out. Back then, my primary reason for cutting it was pressure since I was in the process of applying for a job that wouldn't allow long hair. However, my subconscious secondary reason was because I tired of feeling like I didn't like my best. I had been in the awkward stage for a number of months and I felt like my hair was slightly frizzy, unmanageable, thin, damaged etc. not to mention just unsightly. It was far from being the gorgeous mane I wanted so bad.
Now looking in retrospect, I wonder if my hair type might actually be more manageable than I thought. The truth is, I had gotten into the habit of straightening it with flat irons, as well as not sticking to a consistent, healthy routine of washing/conditioning. I can't help but think now that those factors might have contributed to my hair growing out so poorly, because when I look at some older pictures of my hair at moderate lengths before I even knew what flat irons were, my hair appears relatively straight and sleek verses wavy and frizzy. I don't know this for sure and I realize it's possible my hair texture has changed since then. But I'm hoping nonetheless for a better outcome this time around.
That being said, I'm open to any one's advice on how to properly care for my hair to expedite a fast, healthy growing process, even while I'm still at this extremely short stage. Whether its just simple tips I can be doing, products/treatments you recommend, or even a full-blown routine for hair care, I'm eager to learn. I plan to post updates monthly. My current goal is shoulder length, but who knows, I'll probably want to keep going once I reach that. I'm just hoping not to burn out in the awkward stage like last time.
Attached is a photo of my hair about a month ago, shortly after buzzing it down to 1/8th. I realize a closer profile shot would be better and the men's locker room might not be the most glamorous background, but it's something I snapped after practice and it's the only shot I have of a month ago so it'll have to do. I'll post two more pics of my hair goals so you guys can have a better idea of what I'm aiming for. Anyhow, if you actually read through this long-winded post, thanks and if not, I can't say I blame you. I'll keep future posts more brief. Thanks and God bless.

Hello Mr. Hunte,
First of all, welcome to MLHH!!!
Secondly, as far as hair care goes, you'll get plenty of good advise here -- although of course there will also be some differing opinions.
My person thoughts are for you to not worry too much about it for right now, until it starts getting long enough to enter into unfamiliar territory for you (if you've never had long hair before, this is often referred to as, "the awkward stage")...
Many people have commented here in the past, however, that any chemical altering of your natural hair color or degree of curliness risks seriously damaging your hair texture & quality (other than something as safe as Henna) -- including using hair irons for straitening, or even excessive use of blow-dryers.
But for now, just visit here often and read this board regularly, and you are bound to find a plethora of information to help you on your journey...
