I'm now old enough to have gone through several cycles of fashion regarding men's hair styles. I'm a "Mormon" living in Mormon country so a clean-cut conformity is rather expected among those I associate with. Thing is, there's also a "teaching" that comes up once in a while, usually aimed at youth that states something like this: "Following fashion and being a slave to trends is wrong." This theme comes up in lots of religious teachings everywhere.
So if I wear an anachronistic long hairstyle instead of the current trend of shaving the head like a Gulag prisoner... I get criticized for it?? Strange!!
I grow my hair long because I like it that way. I have good hair and it hasn't turned gray. It's still the neutral dishwater blond that it's been for 61 years. I may even have it highlighted. It's my business, no one elses, and if they don't like it, they can go pound sand!
Hi jeff,
It's always a challenge to live in an environment that can be unsupportive or even hostile towards longhairs. I grew up in that kind of environment myself, due to my dad being extremely anti-longhair; so I had to leave home at age 18 in order to be free to be able to make my own decisions on such matters as my own hair length preferences. Living in an area of the country that is generally anti-longhair is of course different from just living inside an anti-longhair household; but the bigoted surrounding mindset is still basically the same: it's unlikely that you'll ever change their minds or attitudes on the subject, so as hard as it is, you have to live knowing that you will be viewed in a negative way simply because you look "different" from what they believe you "should" look like...
I'm lucky I live in San Francisco -- most people I know here couldn't care less whether your hair is flowing down to your knees or buzzed off up to the bone!
In any case: Welcome to MLHH -- you'll get plenty of friendly longhaired support here!!!
