Hey, I've got a question for you guys. I'm growing out my hair(it's about halfway to my shoulders) and I was wondering if it's normal to have lots of short hairs mixed in. Around the part in my hair I've noticed a lot of short hairs (1 inch or so) that have been ripped from brushing/combing and stuff. I went to get my first haircut in a year and the guys used a tiny comb and kinda ripped through my tangles and after that I decided to inspect and noticed them. So are the short hairs just part of having long hair haha? Do you have them? Also, do you lose hair in the shower and stuff? Just curious, thanks in advance!

Short hairs are normal. Hairs are in a continuous state of flux with some shedding and new ones growing in. My hair reaches my knees, and yet, I have lots of short ones growing in. They will eventually grow to 2 or 3 feet long. (see photo)

Sorry for the very delayed response, kinda forgot about this message haha. Thanks for taking the time to take a picture, really calmed me down. Thanks!
If it's not normal then we're both weird! ;)
Mine is a few inches past my shoulders now and I have little short hairs all over (I think everyone does). It's just that they are most noticeable on top of your head and in the area where you part your hair, because on the side/back etc. they just get covered up and mixed in with other longer hairs and you don't see them.
I also lose many, many hairs each day. Be it brushing, roughhousing with kids (ouch!) or showering. Even if I were super careful about not breaking any hairs I'd still be shedding. Apparently hair grows in cycles with some falling out and regrowing at a later time, and then you have broken hairs and pulled hairs to add to that. As long as you're aren't balding though it's all good and I wouldn't worry about it, because you have oodles of hair reinforcements on their way to make up for it.
Also, the longer your hair gets, the more hair you *appear* to lose. You'll notice it falling out and laying around a lot more simply because longer hairs are far more visible than shorter ones. I still sometimes get a start in the shower when I pull off what seems to be a giant clump of hair and think all my hair is going to fall out, only to sort through it and realize it's less than 10 hairs. They're just lengthy enough that they can ball together and look like a lot more than they really are.
Best wishes for your continued growth.
I have that exact same problem, but I'm also losing a lot of hair at the hairline, so I am guessing I'm experiencing male pattern baldness, which really sucks- but I have all the pre-doispositions for it, grandpa started losing hair as a teenager. I don't know what to do!!!
