First and foremost thanks for all the replies guys
I am looking for some old photos that predate what my big
brother refers to as the "Hippie" era of the 1960s and 1970s
and the Victorian era interests me the most.
does anyone know of any sites which contain Victorian era photos of gentlemen with long hair so I can show my Brother that it was never just intended to be associated with just the "hippies"!
thanks!
Typing 'Photos of Victroian gentlemen" or some version of same may well bring you to your goal, You may also want to research old cavalry and military photos as well. many men in the old west had what is now considered long hair. sometimes quite long, in fact. In the cavalry, your rank determined the amount of facial hair one was allowed to grow, With Mi=oustaches, goatees, Sideburns and full beards quite common, among even the highest ranks. It was not until WWI that the military crew or buzz cut and clean shaven face became popular.
Rteck,
Google House of David baseball images. Not Victorian but from around the turn of the 19th into the 20th century.

Actually, long hair on men predates the Victorian era by a long, long time. Long hair on males was a sign of power in ancient Greece. Even in the middle ages this was the case in Europe.
So a lot of the history isn't only men, but men of many different social standings, from Germanic Goths of the Middle Ages to American males in the 1960s to ancient times.
Just Wikipedia it. It's all over the place.
And if people don't want to accept the reality, they can continue to stick their head in the sand.
House of David Baseball Players, 1920...
Not Victorian, but certainly not hippies. The House of David was a religious community in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Yes! These guys were apparently very popular as players, and celebrities. The community was involved in many activities, a fascinating story:

However they were apparently totally celibate, and that's apparently why the original House of David has died out.

and no doubt more to be found if one was to research the era.
I assume that you have not yet tried Google? This is hardly the sort of thing many will have at their finger tips I would suggest.
Hello Mister Sean,
I would highly recommend the RAPUNZEL'S DELIGHT website.
Go to the part where there is a listing of vintage sepia photos. In the section of Weird and Unusual ( i think it is called) you will find and see quite a few old 19th century vintage photographs of men with long hair. A lot of the old time photos on the website are of women with super long hair back in another slower time when people were not in such a big hurry to rush around as they do nowadays in the "quickening" which the prophetess Mother Shipton coined her vision of a future time from the eyes of a person living in the 1499's.
Trully a great website for inspiration of old fashioned hair.
Yours trully,
Mister Duncan.
Not a photo but a good self-portrait sketch of Rossetti (1847).
And a few more longhairs throughout history (scroll down):

Yes, there were longhairs before there were hippies.

A better picture of him is in my book Our LONG HAIRitage. Since he wore it long during life, he still had a full head of hair even when old. By the way this highly referenced book proves longer hair is healthier. See book review by Duncan.
