Hello! Nice to meet you all. I have always wanted long hair, and have tried a few times to grow it out when I was younger in my early twenties.
Now I am 29, and I started again growing it out about 6 months ago, but I am taking much better care of my hair.
This is what I am aiming for in style:
How much longer you guys think I have? Should I start letting the sides grow out now? At the above picture, it looks like all of his hair is of equal length, so I had the sides trimmed until my bangs grew out near their length, so I am thinking of leaving the sides alone now.
Hi Keith and welcome along. Glad you've made the decision to grow out your hair again and it's good to have a style to aim for. It's very much a long term journey as average hair growth is around 1/2" per month. For the moment, just let it grow and keep away from the scissors, then as it gets longer, you can home in on the style. Good luck. Ian
Hi Keith,
Welcome! I agree with Ian totally. Just let it grow without cuts or trims. Use caps or bandannas during the "awkward stage". Good luck with your journey.

Just leave scissors, razors and clippers along. Your hair will not grow if you are constantly cutting bits. the time to do any adjustment is after 4 years when growing is complete - or earlier if you want (say) shoulder or whatever length only.
Shouldn't take very long. As others have said, hair grows about 1/2" a month. I'd say in about a year you'd have the length you are looking for. I recommend not trimming the side or front at all. Maybe give the back a very small trim to avoid the mullet look.
Cool! Thanks for the replys, and wish me luck! I've never respected long haired men as much as I do now due to not understanding what they have to go through to get there.
I am pretty crazy when it comes to making my goals so I think I will be fine. But not to say, I am really dreading the awkward stage, but I am going to try and put as much time into that stage as possible to lessen its awkward-ness, and maybe come up with a style that doesn't look so bad.
Love reading the posts here, everyone is so friendly, supportave, and smart.
Keep up the great work!
Hi Keith,
Welcome to the hyperboard, thank you for your kind words about our community, and I totally agree with you!
You have a good head of hair to work with, and for now, I would say just to let it grow! As it gets longer, you can decide what kind of style you want, and you may decide that you would like it even longer than your goal photo.
Keep it growing,
David
