Hey all,
I'm getting ready to start a new job, just got the offer yesterday and I'm pretty excited about it. Very good starting salary and it's an IT gig at a financial-related company that is firmly planted in the list of 100 best companies to work for.
Anyway, since I still have short-ish (but shaggy) hair I didn't ask or say anything about growing my mane in the job interview. However, the culture at this company is very "anti-corporate" as they describe themselves. Long and short of it is the people interviewing me were all wearing jeans (interview was on a Friday) and when I mentioned how I'm glad to see they have jean Fridays, one guy replied "EVERY day is jeans day here..." haha. That combined with the fact that some of the guys interviewing me were wearing earrings, I am assuming that men growing long hair will NOT be a problem here.
I guess I just want to let it grow and see what happens. Eventually I'll mention it and make sure they don't have a problem with it though.
My question to y'all is, based on my description of the company would you agree with my guess that they won't have a problem with long hair?
Thanks all!
Hmm. anti-corporate. blue jeans. and earrings? Very good signs of a company being OK with long hair I'm guessing.
Who can say but the company itself? No one.
However from your description, if correct, it should be fine/
Sounds good!
I am sure a lot of us would like to work there, or somewhere very similar.
Good luck with your new job.
Hi Paladin,
From what you said in your post I wouldn't at all worry about growing your hair out. However I wouldn't make an issue out of your mane getting longer by mentioning it just to feel them out.Obviously they will see your longer hair progressing unless they have very poor vision!lol. With that said it sounds like you landed a very good job:)Congratulations!
Mark
Sounds like the situation will be fine. A good strategy on your part might be to not bring up your hair at all, so that it becomes normalcy on the job, and thus, a non-issue.
Appreciate the input everyone. I guess I'm sort of hoping that when I walk in and start my first day in a couple weeks I'll see other guys with long hair. It's happened before haha.
Thanks for your input and for the congrats!
I think you've got it made. Sounds like if they were going to say anything about it at all, they would have already done it.
Steve
Sounds good that you got the offer. From what I have seen in various IT branches, long hair or facial hair is at least acceptable, and in one IT branch I have seen, longhairs are the majority.
Another good thing about being hired is that you get a chance to prove yourself a good worker. What I mean is that if you have long hair before you get the job, it could be easier to be judged for it by a boss who does not know how good you are. The route you are going will allow you to build up a good reputation and hopefully make the bosses more tolerant of the hair.
Anyway, hope it works out for you.

I worked for a company where they wore jeans/earrings/etc. every day but they did complain about my hair. So one may not corrolate with the other.
Interesting... were you wearing it loose or keeping it in a tail? Did you cut it or were you still able to keep it?
Kept it loose, sometimes in a pony tail but most of the time loose.
Never cut it, they never brought it up again.
It's now been several years since it was brought up.
