I've been letting all my hair grow out, but when my hair was short I had fringe, so the front is still shorter than the back. I can pull the back into a ponytail, but the front is too short, so I leave it all loose. But it annoys me to no end to constantly have to push my hair out of my face, which is why I have been considering getting the fringe cut short again and just growing out the back. I've browsed the internet for pictures of young men with fringe and I like the way it looks on most of them, but none of them had hair in the back that was longer than chin-length. Do you think it would look good or bad on a young man with shoulder-length straight hair to have fringe? Another factor that worries me is that I heard from a hairdresser that cutting one section of the hair shorter than the rest slows the rate of hair growth. Anyone know if this is true?
I don't see how cutting one part of your hair would make the rest grow slower. Hair grows from the follicles, so I don't believe that if you cut fringe that the other folicles would know this and produce more slowly. So, I would not worry about it slowing down growth.
If you don't want to put the front of your hair behind your ears, or if it is to short, you might be able to use hair pins. Maybe you could pull the fringe under the longer part of your hair and put the pins under so no one would see them.
I guess this is hard to explain without a picture, but I hope it helps.

Getting a fringe cut in won't affect the rate of hair growth, though if you want it to grow out again it might seem like it's taking longer. A simple haircut won't affect the rate of growth.
If you really like the look of shoulder length hair with a fringe cut into it, then I'd say go for it. After all, it's about what you want. But before you get it cut, just make absolutely sure that it's what you want. If you change your mind after, it will take some time for it to grow out again. There was a suggestion I saw on here once that before you decide to get any sort of hair cut, you give yourself two weeks before doing any thing. If you still want to cut part of your hair for every day of those two weeks, then do it. But if at any time during the two week period you have a doubt about it, then you need to start counting two weeks again from that day. This way, you're absolutely sure it's the right thing to do.
Alternatively, there are lots of ways to manage your fringe if it isn't long enough to be tied back. Beanies and hats are very popular these days with young guys (myself included), and they're a great way to manage hair. You just put the beanie on, and make sure your hair is under it. That way it's out of your face and will stop bothering you. Also, there are a lot of guys who have headbands (like the one I have linked to). It keeps your hair up and out of your face, but it can still be loose at the back. Headbands are my favourite choice because my hair will stay loose at the back, and out of my face.
However, like I said it's up to you. Look at your options, and if you are thinking of cutting your fringe, try to remember the two week rule, and you won't regret it later :)

I agree with w0nderfish that you should do what you want to do with your hair. Quoting Rick Nelson from long ago, "See you can't please everyone so you got to please yourself." I don't have bangs but do sport a long bob cut, so I am out on the fashion frontier (as all of us longhairs are!), and I find most people really don't care about my hair. But, I do! I enjoy my cut and that is what is important.
Another idea is visit a wig shop and try on a shoulder length wig with a fringe and see what you would look like.
I know where you are coming from, when I started growing mine longer I had a cut similar to yours -- shorter on the top and front than on the back. Getting the back hair into a tail was fairly easy, but it's taken a year for the front to get long enough to mostly stay back. In the mean time I resorted to caps, headbands and hair clips to keep the front out my face. As it grew longer I was able to tuck the shorter bits under the longer parts. Like you I thought about clipping the front shorter at times but decided that the only way I'd know which way was better was to just let the front get long and then decide.
As for your questions, it can look alright but you have to take care to keep it from looking too much like the dreaded mullet. :P
And cutting the front shorter will not affect the growth, it will only make the front short!

The hair dresser is plain dumb so ignore.
Just let it grow, it will catch up. When you have your hair in a tail use some hair spray to restrain it.
personally I'd say No to a fringe (it usually looks stuipid as in the mullet case) but Dale who posted here actually looks good - but he has wavy-ish looking hair and a good face - so it depends on your face, bone structure and your hair type (if its fine & straight I'd say def NO to a fringe) At the end of the day its about patience - try the headband for annoyance-control like the other bloke on here said and give it time.
Just my personal, female perspective... :)
