Last night a friend of the family said out of the blue "you know your hair"—I'm thinking great here comes the haircut comment—"I think it's going to look great on you long and it suits you well". I was thrown so far off gaurd I didn't know what to say, but it made my night being so off-the-wall and unexpected. I'm used to the negative ones, but something positive is nice.

Glad to hear.... and one positive comment makes up for many negative ones in my experience.. gives you the extra push you need.
You're right--the positive ones really feel good, don't they? I've gotten several of those, usually from people that I figured were least likely to give them. Guess that's why they ended up meaning so much.
Wish MY family had such friends! What a refreshing change!

It is always good to get a nice comment. It can be especially good to get favorable hair comments while around family because
I think it reasures them that long hair can be o.k. on men.

That sort of thing is always refreshing! I had a similar reaction the other day, at a thanksgiving dinner at a church that my grandmother attends (family wanted me to come). Mostly very short hair men there and even many of the women having short hair. Here I am with hair down to my shoulder blades (loose) and a scruffy beard coming in, eating at the table with family, when a friend of my grandmother's (a real sweetheart, who I've known for a long time, though she even has short hair), anyway I hadn't seen her in quite some time (used to have short hair) and she came up to me and complimented me on my hair, told me how she wished she had it, and even ran her fingers through it. Mentioned how she liked the ponytail look but loose is good too, LOL. Kind of caught me off guard as well. Good times.
