Howdy all! : )
Wanted to kill two birds with one stone and provide an update, as well as a question regarding haircare that most seasoned longhairs on here would think to be increasingly rote.
Firstly, the disciplinary office at my school has mostly overlooked my longish hair (that brushes a decent deal past the collar, -gasp!-), so I'm content without the old song and dance of a trip to the salon. ^_^
But to my problem; I can't quite figure out how to get my hair to look healthy every day out of the week. It looks fantastic if I shampoo and condition it daily, but the routine drying out of the scalp (à la shampoo) causes me to worry that this will aggravate the possibility of androgenic alopecia (MPB) in the future. So for the past few months, I have been alternating between a day where I shampoo -and- condition, and one where I merely condition (per suggestions that have been prescribed here), with Friday and Saturday being the only two days of the week that I shampoo/condition backtoback during the week. To reiterate for clarity's sake; it looks illustrious and lovely when I shampoo and condition it. . .
But on the days that I just condition my hair, it tends to gather in loose bands of hair and look a tad greasy (that is, unless I comb my hair straight back). So while talking to a locker buddy of mine, ey said that eyr hair looks best when ey only shampoo it every four days. I was iffy about this method, but nevertheless proceeding in attempting it; and my hair looked to be even grosser when going an even longer period without shampoo.
So, yeah, aah! I'm not at all sure how to keep it looking pretty even on the days that I merely condition it. Help? :O

Hi Venya,
Sorry to hear you are dealing with issues regarding hair care but as I've learned over the years sometimes you just need to experiment with product and wash cycles, then see how your hair responds.I admit to shampooing and conditioning my hair daily for many years before moving to more infrequent wash cycles like I do now.I don't think over cleaning you hair will cause MPB but I'm no expert on that.I'm just thankful it doesn't afflict me and at my age I feel safe from the MPB problem.Anyway maybe someone else here might offer something you could try.It really isn't rocket science after all:)You have great hair my friend so do enjoy it.Cheers

Hi Venya,
Great to see an update from you finally and that your hair looks great :D ! Also glad to hear that your school has finally backed off :) . Be happy, because your best days are still ahead of you ;) .....
I can't really speak from long-haired experience, but speaking from my own hair experience (and knowing that every person is different) - I know that for me, my hair doesn't look good at all if I don't shampoo and condition it everyday. If I go a day without, it looks greasy and all matted together... not good :( . Even though shampooing every night gives me a nice wad of hair to say goodbye down the drain to each time, it's a necessity :( . You gott'a do what you gott'a do.....
Now some folks can go a week without shampooing their hair (or so they say... my wife every two to three nights). Lucky to be them, huh :p ?
Have you ever thought about an after-wash product, like oiling or something, if you do have to shampoo every night, to keep your scalp from drying out? Just a thought...
Whatever you do, best of luck man ^^ ! Can't wait until this summer rolls around :D !

Shampooing and conditioning every day is overkill. I recommend one to 3 times a week. It may take a week to a month to get used to the new regiment. Do not use any shampoos that contain Sodium Laury Sulfate (SLS). It is a harsh detergent in most store bought shampoos. There are plenty of non-SLS shampoos out there I recommend such as Super Hair Energixer, Ginesis, Wen, Shi Kai, etc. You have to try different ones and you may have to alternate shampoos after a while. The only tim you need conditioner is for damaged hair, otherwise why use it at all? Remember, your very own oil (sebum) extruded by the follicle is designed to protect the hair and scalp. Overshampooing strips too much oil away. More information about this is in my book, Our LONG HAIRitage: http://longhairitage.com
Our LONG HAIRitage - don't use SLS
Always approach "one size fits all" advice with caution. For example, Roger states that "Shampooing and conditioning every day is overkill," and "the only time you need conditioner is for damaged hair." I disagree, and there are MANY guys here who shampoo and/or condition their hair daily--with great results--who stand as evidence that doing so can help maintain healthy hair. There are others who only ever wash with water. Some use only conditioner a few times a week, but never shampoo. Some use coconut, olive, or jojoba oil. The best advice--regarding hair, or anything else in life--is usually to study, experience, and experiment, and draw your own conclusions about what makes the most sense and works the best for you.

Here's my suggestions: First try extending the number of days between shampooing. It seems to take a while for your body to adjust it's oil production so don't get immediately discouraged. When I first started growing my hair longer I had to shampoo daily or else it would look greasy. I'm now up to going two weeks or so with conditioning only before needing a light shampooing.
Second, when you do condition, apply it liberally enough to practically work up a lather. This will help remove more oil from your scalp and hair. You might also want to experiment with various conditioners as different formulations produce different results. There's no need for high dollar formulations, the stuff you can buy for around $1 work fine, which in turn makes it easy to try out lots of different formulations. :-)
