Since it is Thanksgiving Holiday here in the U.S., I think it apppropriate to give thanks to our long haired ancestors - nearly every nation was originally founded by long-haired men. But in more recent times, I can't say thanks enough to the brave young men of the 1960s era. I was a teenager in the 1970s, so it was a little easier on us than it was for those in the 1960s. So thank you guys for having the courage to grow long hair and taking all the unjust hassles for our benefit. And special thanks to those of that era who actually kept their hair long til this very day. This takes courage and strength. Thank you for being steadfast and not succumbing to the scissor happy hair hackers who treat hair as a waste product.
Our LONG HAIRitage - give thanks to the 1960s
While it is true that poeple like me started growing our hair
long in the 1960s inspired by the Beatles i'd point out we weren't
the first. Look at some of the long hairs who founded the United
States many years before. (like Ben Franklin)
Exactly, that's why I pay special tribute to Ben and several other founding fathers in my book (with their pics) Our LONG HAIRitage - in fact there are about 100 images in my book.

Well thank you Roger! One of my 1860's influences. Zebulon Pike!
Well, just had to get out my "crayolas" for Zebulon. (Haven't done one of these in ages.) Happy Thanksgiving! :-)
Enjoy! :-)
Justin~
Thanks Justin,
Well done! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!

Wow, Zebulon Pike - very cool. I got a picture of Albert Pike in my book - I'll have to check if they were related.

Roger,
I think the picture I posted was that of Albert Pike. I was misinformed on the identity of the photo and passed that along. Sorry about that. Zebulon Pike from an earlier period in American history.

It wasn't easy, But if one perservered in the 60s, it was possible. I got the usual trouble from my parents, at first. Started growing my hair longer in Feb. of '64. What was considered "Long" then is laughable today. Attached is a candid pic of me at age 17 in 1968, taken at a local St. Louis suburban teen club in. That's me in the Paisley shirt and the shoulder length hair and "color enhanced" "Teen Stache" At the time it was not uncommon for guys to be called all manner of names, or even attacked. There were places my freinds and I knew not to go as it was truly life threatening, particularly in some rural areas. A truly interesting time and I am glad I was the age I was, when I was that age.
Wow, what a cool pic and blast from the past! You looked awesome as it must have taken you great courage to look like that at the time.Hmmmm, 1968 I was only around 6 years old then.LOL.A bit young to be a longhair as I totally missed that era.For me it was the 1980s before I got it!LOL.Cheers
Mark
Very cool awesome classic picture!
As far as "long" goes, that's why I defined "long hair" scientifically in my book: to be considered long, hair should be 10-12 inches or longer. Otherwise, technically it's in the medium (shoulder length) range.

And a Happy Thanksgiving to all our longhaired US friends past and present, from the other side of the pond. Ian
