From my own personal experience I have found that Women within both the Goth and Metal subcultures are the most tolerant towards longer hair on Men.
in fact, they generally prefer guys with Long hair.
on the other hand, it is the preppie girls and Yuppie women that generally prefer Short hair on Men and are less tolerant of the concept of long hair on Men because they are conformists themselves.
there are of course exceptions. I just have not run into any Female Yuppie types that are fans of long hair on Men yet.
the punk and alt/indie communities seem mixed on this issue.
has anyone else experienced the same thing?
Women, and Men, who are into classic Rock and Rock in general seem to have no issue with long hair. Neither do women who like country & Western. As a matter of fact, it is in rural communities more than in large cities that you find greater tolerance for long haired, and bearded, males. much the opposite of 40 years ago. In my world, woking with many in construction trades. there is no issue, though it does seem to set the occasional bankers and "suits' back to see my ponytail. Some act as if you've moved their food dish.
I noticed a surge of popularity of long hair on a trip through the southern Appalachians in 1974. This change was so much from the short haired red neck look that I had seen earlier in those parts that it could not be noticed.
On the other hand, I've seen little head or facial hair on trips to the upper Midwest over the years. Go west from there though, and you'll see a lot of hair in the Northwest.
These differences may be rural vs. local, but they may also just be regional. Iowa and Minnesota have a lot of rural areas as well as metro areas, and I've noticed there is a real shortage of hair there. Considering how cold it gets in those two states, climate sure doesn't explain it.
