***Warning***
This is just another one of those "That's not fair" posts we see on here all the time. ;)
So I was dropping some family kids off for some kind of church function earlier tonight (they call it Awana), and I ran into my aunt there. She once again made a point of asking me if I was going for the "girly" look, and I've had a bit of a beard going now for a couple of months. Anyway, it got me to thinking... Her husband has had a shaved face as long as I've been alive. Why doesn't she ask him if he's aiming for the girly look? At least with me growing my hair it's a natural function of the male human body, whereas shaving is artificial appearance altering that guides one towards an unarguably more feminine look. When I shave she never mentions anything about me trying to look girly either. So what gives? Ah well, just another one of those logical inconsistencies I guess...
PS:
My aunt is the sweetest lady in the world, I harbor no ill will against her! Though I do sometimes grow tired of the teasing (she doesn't say it in a mean way, but it still can get old). I also don't think shaving is girly at all, but it's one of those things that got me to thinking and it just doesn't make any sense that a guy would be considered girly for growing out his hair but not for shaving his strictly male facial hair. On the upside, when I went back to pick them up later in the evening I did see a guy with a ponytail going at least halfway down his back, he was also picking up kids. There is hope after all! ;P
Just answer Yes! and whip out a sparkly pink barrette!
and...
Glue a My Little Pony to the roof of your car.
and...
"Who do you recommend for a good manicure?
Don't hate on ponies! Though the male characters aren't exactly stellar role models (I guess it's the "boys are icky" mentality being experienced by so many prepubescent girls everywhere), the ones that are have long, luscious manes.
Pictured is Big Macintosh. Yes, I'm a brony.
Does my mane always look this good? Eeeeeeyup.
Hahaha.Yes.
When I am confronted, I now play it up even more.
"I look like a girl? Awesome! I'm going even longer, then."
"Cool! It will be awesome when my girlfriend and I get mistaken for a lesbian couple!!!"
This could just be me, but I always thought that clean shaven men look very unnatural. I think all men should at least sport some sort of stubble. This in my opinion differentiate men from women more than long hair does. As for the teasing.... yeah expect that. People can be ignorant, but it sounds like your aunt is just teasing in a non-harmful manner.
I see your point, but it's kind of narrow-sighted. It's not possible for all men to grow facial hair. My great-grandfather never grew a single whisker. He was full-blooded Seneca (one of the Iroquois nations). I have enough of his genes to prevent me from growing anything more than pathetic-looking stubble. Many American Indians are unable to grow facial hair, and I'd hardly call them unmanly.
Nor would I! I simply meant men who can grow facial hair but still shave anyway. *I* don't think it's girly, as I pointed out in my original post, just thought it was interesting that third parties don't consider it "trying to be girly" but do consider growing head hair to be girly.
I definitely agree that there's a double standard.
i agree with u almost 100%. if someone said to me if i am going for the girly look, i would just look at them, lift my chin a little and start rubbing my beard as if i am showing my beard off and say, "yeah, i dont think its going too well though."
