The way long hair has for women?
the reason I ask this is because I ran across this clip on youtube
by accident and could not believe that women and girls actually wore their hair in these styles back then.
it looks like helmet hair on a bad day, sprayed stiff and a person whom I spoke with said back then long hair was not that common on women like it is now.
what do you think guys? do you think in 20 years long hair for Men will be the norm?
1968 women's hairstyles
The "norm" is governed by fashion and fashion goes round in generational cycles. Right now, here in the UK, the "retro 70s/80s" look is "in" - so long hair on guys is cool and pretty common. But people get bored, fashion goes on and I suspect the next "new" look will be retro 90s - spikey short hair for guys.
Sad but that's life!
Then again ... who knows? Fashion has never been entirely predictable. ;)

It will never become the norm because fashion dictates what so many men do.
however it will become more accepted than it has in the past - that would be an enormous step forward.
Long hair on men already HAS been the norm over the course of thousands of years, even on this continent. Natives here commonly had long hair.
If Homo Sapiens survive long enough, then it's virtually 100% chance that some day, long hair on males will be the norm.
But, what is "the norm" all about? I, personally, view conformity as a barrier that holds us back from being who we are. If a man or woman feels that a shaved head is part of who they are, then I support it. If a man or woman feels long hair is who they are, I support that too.
But if a man or woman's appearance is what others expect from them, not their own, then I don't support it.
As long as we are governed by men like this...
... no other "norm" will pass. This IS the norm. Even if shaggy pink hair is fashion (only with a yellow baggy), everybody will end with a gray suit and graown short hair. Modern world hates fashion.
Plus, I think we live in a society far too centered on individuals. Can you imagine a native american sporting short hair while men in his tribe are longhaired, just because he feels himself with short hair ? Come on. The occidental society largely focus on individuals, so it's trendy to claim the right to feel himself. Not bad, but this have not been seen elsewhere in the history of human.
Good night,
Vivien.
Long hair will become the norm after the next revolution whenever that takes hold.
we are starting to see the seeds of this next revolution emerge so I am VERY hopeful that long hair will become quite commonplace within the next five to ten years!
...Society has become too encompassed with the short hair styles on men, everyone seems to have forgotten about history. It is obvious that society does not want to reflect back on the trends of yesteryear, that just a few decades ago long hair was a common sight on young men who were eager to defy society's conservative grasp on fashion and culture. Nowadays, it's like being different is a crime. We have our primary (elementary) school teachers filling our children's minds with the ideas that everyone should be accepted, no matter who they are or what they look like, which is most certainly an over-statement in the real world. Why the hell does this not count for a man's head of hair too. Instead of being pathetic hypocrits, they'd may as well spare themselves the irony and tell kids that they should accept anyone except guys with long hair.
If there is one thing that annoys me about society then it's that. Unfortunately though, I don't see this becoming the norm because of people like that. Not that I really want to see long hair on men as the norm, I mean what's the point of looking awesome if everyone else does, that's part of being a long-hair, looking better than everyone else.:)
Good point! :)

On another note, does it have anything to do with the coming or Thatcher in 1979. Up until then and shortly after, there were quite a few men in the U.K. who had long hair?
True, I thought about that as well. If they want to be ugly, it's their decision. On the other hand it is hard for me sometimes to see so much ugly - shaved or close-cropped heads are especially repulsive!
Our LONG HAIRitage promotes long hair
AMEN!!
I know people who consider themselves "liberal" and proselytize that we must accept every minority group including people of the Islamic faith and people with different sexual orientation, but when it comes to long hair on Men they have absolutely nothing to say!
some of these same people even have sons with very short crops to buzzed heads!!
Well, it was up until about 150 years ago so I wouldn't be surprised. Blame the industrial revolution and robotified army for the short hair
also, blame the arrival of Yuppies within the last 30+ years as well!!! this group along with the Neoconservatives helped usher in a DARK ERA of closely cropped barbershop haircuts!!!
if there is to be a long hair resurgence for the majority of Men they have to be willing to stand up for their rights in the first place rather than continue to be a subordinate of the current system!!
When REAL Men(Men who stand their ground and defend their rights and their families) return instead of these Macho "Buzzboys" wanna-be`s then things will start to change!!!
We cannot depend on Government legislation to change things since we are not seen as a special minority group who's rights are being denied!!
Politicians have ignored us for the most part and many probably hope that we just disappear from society all together!!
We must do it ourselves and probably by organizing and having support groups may be a start!
Was it the industrial revolution or the rise of the republican capitalists who overthrew the aristocracy who were against long hair?
For example, King Louis XVI who was executed had longish hair.
Do a Google search on pictures of kings of England and you'll find quite a few long haired kings amongst them.
King Charles I of England had long hair. He was beheaded by Oliver Cromwell, a republican after being defeated in the English Civil War.
Charles I's loyalists, the cavaliers had long hair, while Cromwell's soldiers, the roundheads had short hair, though Cromwell himself had long hair, though not as long as the king's.
Both kings Charles II of England who re-took the throne after Cromwell's death, and Charles (Carlos) II of Spain had long hair.
Men of the Chinese aristocracy had very long hair but that changed after the aristocracy was overthrown. The Chinese communists were against longhair on men for the same reason, even though Marx had longish hair.
So the real historical reason for antipathy against long hair on men could have its roots in the victory of the emergent republican capitalist class over the feudal aristocracy.

Well, on the subject of women's hairstyles, I was around back then. Long hair for women was out of fashion in the '50s and below-shoulders hair was uncommon in adult women until the early '70s, though an increasing number of younger women wore it in the '60s. A lot of the styles in the video were common among women in the '60s. It was a great decade for operators of beauty shops because women seemed to be getting their hair done all the time back then. Women had not yet been liberated and fit into the workforce in the '60s. A high interest in aesthetics and grooming is probably a basic trait of he human female, so doing hair was one way to fulfill that. Those shorter lengths offered more options for creative cuts and styles of the sort in fashion at the time.
As for long hair becoming "the norm" for men, it's possible, though not likely anytime soon. Long hair has been in fashion in past centuries, but a side effect of popular media and a cultural tendency toward mass production and uniformity seems to enforce a certain visage as the male ideal in our time. Still, I think we are enjoying a greater social tolerance of individuality than ever before, which probably means that, while it won't be the norm, long hair for men will remain at least a moderately acceptable option for some time.
