I found this message board and thought I'd post a question that has been on my mind. Does anyone on this board have sons that have long hair? If so how long is it and when did they decide they wanted it long. How did they bring up the subject?
You should scroll down to the Halloween posts. There are some pics of longhair boys that are quite impressive.
I gave my sons the option, but they have opted for short hair so far.

Hi, I'm 18 so no kids of my own, but I have had long hair since I was like 2 years old. I always loved my long hair and that's why it's almost to my waist now.
A first time post asking about boys is always a bit 'sus' (suspect) as we say where I come from.
That said, I can't see much harm in answering.
We let my son's hair grow when he was little, except that my wife insisted that he had a fringe (that's bangs in American) when he was small. Probably wise, so he could see where he was going. He chose to get a 'spiky' haircut when he was 8, and grew it back out when he was about 12 (?), and now has long hair again (he's now 18). I think it is now about waist length, so similar to mine (in length, his is much nicer!).
I don't believe in dictating the length of other people's hair, including my own kids, regardless of gender (our other child is a girl). I had to put up with that, and I don't see why anyone else should have to.
We made them wait at least a couple of weeks before taking them to get any significantly shorter cut, but that was just so they wouldn't regret it. Despite that, when our daughter opted to get hers cut to shoulder length, she regretted it even before she left the salon, whereas it took our son years to decide he wanted to grow his back.
As my wife and I have long hair, default hair length for both our kids is long hair, regardless of gender, but once they could decide they did, and both of them eventually settled for long. So, although especially our daughter (14) disagrees with us on just about everything, hair is never part of that. I think this is because we let them have free choice of how to wear their hair.
I have come across some long haired guys who got their sons short hair cuts as soon as they were old enough to take to the barber, generally on the theory that it was unfair to the boys to risk name calling from other kids or gender misidentification by semi-blind adults. IME these concerns are entirely misplaced. We never found it to cause problems.
I'm one of the boys with long hair (I'm 18) so I'll give it my best shot.
I started bugging my parents when I was really young (like, still in elementary school) to let me have long hair and they were really stupid about it. When I was 13 and about to enter high school they finally relented, and I've been growing it out for the last five years.
