I hear this all the time. You have to have a particular shaped head, face, hair....ect to pull off looking good with long hair.
Now I guess the same can be said about men with short hair, but no one ever mentions this.
And sadly it can be said that some poor guys will never look good no matter what length their hair is.
I also hear that ponytails look feminine on guys.
Any options or personal experiences with this?

Exactly this! If you are confident in who you are, your hair isn't going to make a difference in how you appear...good or bad.
Ditto on certain hairstyles appearing feminine...although a low ponytail is about as mainstream as you can get for a contained male hairstyle. If you are confident and secure with yourself you can wear any damned style you like.
Side note: I used to sometimes wear more feminine styles (sparkly hairclips and all) because it pissed of some of my crankier (also older and uglier mostly male) passengers, but I always got positive comments from passengers I considered more attractive.
This thing about long hair on men, looking good only on certain shapes of face is simply manipulative speech to discourage guys from growing their hair long.
The person using the latter reasoning, will make it sound like, only a small percentage of men can pull off long hair. Or will make it sound as if it is good on some other people, but not on you.
I have been less than polite with people who pull that one one me.
Have a nice day,
Georges.
Excellent comment Georges. Around 850 B.C., Lycurgus of Sparta said something like: long hair adds beauty to a handsome man, but makes an ugly face even more terrible. In other words long hair enhances a person's appearance, thus for most people long hair adds beauty - because even if someone is rather plain, the hair really adds much beauty to them as well. Our LONG HAIRitage
In my fairly long life experience, if you spend too much time worrying about WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK you will never be happy. It's because A. People think all sorts of things and if you keep looking you'll find someone who disproves of you and B. You're own opinion is the only one that ever really matters. I'd agree that long hair isn't right for certain men-- men who don't want it. It's fine for anybody who does. Simple, huh?
I firmly believe it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks as long as you think your happy with your appearance. People will always try to force their idea of what you should be on you.
