Unfortunately
Two things will need to happen to expedite this
Total economic collapse
followed by
Collapse of "society"
there will not be any more need for haircuts since corporate fascists rules will not apply in the coming age because they
will collapse and no one will have a job they have to go to
and no money for the barber!
Barbershops and so-called "hair salons" will go out of business and there will be NO electricity with the exception of power generators anyway so no use getting out those clippers to do some head shaving. the generators will be used for more important things such as heating in homes and food instead of useless things like haircuts!
it will all be about survival and every Man or Woman for themselves. no one will care about superficial things such as "image" because the Reality-TV and all of that other mindless entertainment will be gone!
No one will care about the latest celebrity gossip or who is sleeping with who or what the new "Trends" are.
it will become all meaningless!
Long Haired Men WILL Roam the earth again!
I just hope that the new Civilization in the aftermath is a lot better than what exists today!!
I will miss using the great hair care products which would be sadly lacking in this Brave New World. I won't miss much else about modern "life". Well it will be interesting to see what happens with the Maya "prophecy" on 21 December 2012?
The best chance for the future of humanity and the planet as a whole is if a big super virus killed 99% of the human population and we had to go back to a more simpler ecologically sustainable way of life.
Duncan
Duncan Interesting ideas, guys. A civilization collapse will not result in overnight compliance to a simpler life. It would, as it has in the past, be a prolonged and messy ordeal. Hair of any length will be the least of concerns for the survivors. Same with a big "die-off" which also has happened priorly. The planet can not support 7 billion+ humans and I imagine that nature will react. As for the Aztec Calendar. The long count end is just that. a long count, that resets, much like our yearly reset on Dec 31st-Jan.1st. The reason there is no calendar beyond this date was the Aztecs got kind of busy with that whole Spanish Conquistador thing.
What we really need are leaders willing to grow their hair out like Albert Pike (see photo). Right now they kowtow to an image that is quite fake and unsightly in my opinion.
Our LONG HAIRitage
Around 50 years ago there was a little unknown young band from Liverpool who were initially made over and given short stylish haircuts, but they began growing it out at least long enough that it partially covered the ears and by the time they appeared in the states many older Americans were "Shocked" by the length of their hair!
this was the post-WW II era when most young Men sported haircuts like Wally Cleaver and Eddie Haskell. the girls length was considerably much shorter than now and worn in styles similar to Patty Duke
With The Beatles a revolution took hold and by the time the 1960s were over both young Men and women were sporting longer hairstyles
most rock musicians ranging from Black Sabbath to Yes had mid-back hair on average which would have seemed unthinkable just a few years earlier.
the "hair" bands of the 1980s continued the celebration of long hair, but there were certain "trends" emerging especially in the U.K for closely cropped hairstyles on Men and many popular groups were beginning to sport the look.
as much as I like some of their tunes, Depeche Mode were one of these 1980s New Wave era bands that sported stylish short closely cropped styles and helped usher in the acceptance of short hair on musicians by the 1990s.
Both Michael Stipe and Billy Corgan certain did not do anything to promote long hair in the 1990s and Metallica, went from long to short "yuppie-like" hairstyles by the mid 1990s.
Unfortunately there was a resurrection of the Wally Cleaver and Eddie Haskell styles along with the traditional barbershop which had had come close to dying out in the early 1970s.
hard or heavy mainstream bands such as Staind , Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Godsmack with their buzzed or shaved heads was becoming the norm by the late 1990s and early 2000s.
when I saw Evanescence on Leno a few years back I thought Amy had nice hair, but where was the hair on the guys?
I think what is needed to bring longer hair back into the mainstream again is the resurgence of popular groups with Male musicians sporting long hair and the longer the better because what is generally the longest won't become the norm for the majority of Men, but will have an influence on the overall length of the masses.
by Popular, I am not referring to bands out there on the fringe , but groups like those who were superstars in the 1970s and 1980s. bands with mass appeal and it does not matter if I like them or not, but if they have long hair that is a plus imho!
once the overall hair length of Male musicians changes to Long hair you will see this spill over into the movies and popular television shows. maybe not the very first year , but within a couple of years and this will probably coincide with many More Men foregoing the closely cropped haircuts in favor for "longish" hair.
stylists will then have to put the clippers away permanently and start doing some of those old Retro styles for businessmen such as David Cassidy`s shag style from the 1970s
the true-blue long haired Males will stop receiving looks of disdain and criticism from peers and family members since it will now have become acceptable to have longer hair again.
until this pop music Hair revolution happens again we will have to continue to deal with the crap from employers, peers, and family members.
we can only hope a "hair" revolution happens again in popular music. the sooner the better!
Personally, I would HATE to see long hair become the norm. I think MitchN made a very good point here: http://www.mlhh.org/messages/287407.html (I've put it the link below too). I do NOT want to look the same as everyone else! I LOVE standing out from the clone crowd.
BUT ... I would like to see long hair on guys more accepted than it is - so we don't have "to deal with the crap from employers, peers, and family members".

No, I said "longish" hair on businessmen circa 1970s so that the guys with long hair would not have to deal with the b.s.
musicians are not mainstream everyday guys and I don't think a musician with mid-back to waist length hair would influence every Male in society anyway even back when that was the norm for Rock performers they didn't.
Exactly! that is what I meant. the only way is if mainstream Men move away from traditional barber and military cuts completely and wear their hair at least long enough to cover the ears
Hey Duncan, I trust all is well in Australia. I always enjoy your posts. But don't worry, the long-haired Christ will return someday and put an end to all this hair-cut madness! The cropheads will be judged for all the damage they have caused!
Our LONG HAIRitage
I'm glad you guys are out there. It's good to know I am not alone in how I think about it. I bring this up in my book, Our LONG HAIRitage about how there is literally a barber or hair salon on every block and around every corner - and I emphasize that this is overkill, and it has greatly contributed to baldness, which, in most cases (my humble opinion) is ugly.
Our LONG HAIRitage - a must read
I'm setting off the nukes now...
They won't affect me 'cause I've already retreated to my subterranean nuclear shelter at the North Pole - complete with fifty years' supply of provisions, solar panels, all my favourite music on an iPod, and an Xbox 360! :p
My hair should be considerably longer by the time I emerge!
