Indulge me a minute, friends. We all know that men's hair styles changed over the millenia and for many of the centuries, men did have long hair. Until the 20th Century, short hair was a fad, not a compulsory rule for men. Some exceptions include 15th Century French Knights (bowl haircuts),Roman Legionaires (shaved or crew). Interestingly enough, long haired English knights brought long hair to France in the Hundred Years' War.
Now to my point. It would seem the "Tyranny of the Mail Coif" is cracking. In the U.S., haircuts weren't big until the 1890's, when the "butt-cut" was high fashion for men. Add to that hairstyle the pince-nez glasses and you had your fashionable American Gentleman. But even then it wasn't compulsory for men to cut their hair. World War I brought that about for the first time when recruits were shorn, ostensibly because of a lice problem. Following the war, men just cut their hair. The Roaring 20's followed, and nearly every man conformed to the hair standard. And businesses made short hair a requirement for employment. Which was ardently enforced for decades.
Today, although there are few longhairs, at least tolerance has grown since 1970. I'm thinking many of you out there who are my age (I'm 46) do see some raise in consciousness. But it is up to us to press on with our individualism and continue to raise the consciousness of our neighbors. Maybe the 21st Century can be the Long Hair Century!
The first thing that needs to be done is to eradicate the negative influences of the Punk and gangsta subcultures.
once mainstream society rejects their influence you will see more and more Men sporting Real hairstyles again and the Longer the better!
