Hey guys,
I've been posting over on beardboard.com over the past two years as I've experimented with my beard. Along the way, I simply forgot to get a haircut! When my hair got to be ponytail length I just tied it back and forgot about it. When it got longer, I folded it up in a sort of bun and kept forgetting about it until one day I REALLY looked in the mirror and was totally shocked by what I saw.
So I guess I'm a longhair now! I think I may keep it through the winter but will probably go back to short hair when springtime hits New York City again. It gets HOT and the long hair really locks the heat in.
But in the meantime, I thought it might be fun to be a part of this community, even if it's just for a couple of months!
Hmmm, well I live in the NYC area and it never even occurred to me during all those hot summers that my longhair was making head hot.lol.I guess everyone is different but after days like today I welcome a nice heat wave and I'll keep my hair thank you;)
Certainly glad to have you around but I don't buy your reasoning for cutting it short......Sorry.Cheers
Mark
Sorry--hope I didn't offend anybody here... just saying hey!
I would suggest trying out long hair during the summer before making a decision about cutting, assuming you like having long hair. In my experience, hair long enough to tail is actually cooler than longish hair. Being long enough to pull it up off your neck is what makes all the difference. So give it a try, it may not be as hot as you think.

You have one gorgeous thick mane. It would truly be sad to cut it off. As Dale said in the post above, ponytailing it will keep you feeling cool on those hot summer days.

I've had long hair since 1964 and have gone through many long hot
summers. Long hair doesn't keep you hot. If anything it can
help you cool off. On many a hot summer day i've gone and gotten
my hair wet to help cool off. Also putting it in a pony tail
also helps keep me cool too.
I don't handle the heat well, but i've always kept my hair
long all year round as well as wearing shorts all year round.
It's also feels great to go around on a hot sumemr day with
shorts, no shirt, and my long hair flowing down my back.
The hair keeps me warm during the winter but doesn't really
keep me hot during the summer. Also air conditioning helps in
the summer too. (Have to run the air conditioner for the
work I have to do on the computer.)
But please don't cut off that great looking hair. Try different ways to tolerate the heat while keeping your great looking hair.
"...So I guess I'm a longhair now!..."
Some guys here strive for years to get what you got in memory failure ! Ha !
Welcome to the MLHH. I hope you stick around and rethink your idea of cutting that beautiful, thick mane.

Hi Fork,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and thank you for sharing this photo of your wonderful thick curls. You have a mane to be proud of, and I really hope you re-consider any decision to cut, and insread, keep on growing!
Welcome aboard,
David
Thanks for the welcome guys. I guess I never knew there were guys out there who felt strongly about having long hair and maybe had to struggle to attain it.
I'm very interested in this group, specifically, what you find appealing about having long hair. Right now I look at it and think, "It's just hair" but I can see for many of the men here that it's more than "just" hair. Why do you want long hair?
This is a similar question that's posed on the beard board I'm a part of--as men verbalize what it is about their hair and appearance that makes them go against the grain and even sacrifice things in order to achieve a certain look.
I hope I didn't come off as offensive with my first post. I realize now I might have sounded a bit careless about my long hair when other men here have struggled all their lives to grow it long. I apologize.
There seem to be all sorts of reasons. For some, it is a sign of rebellion. They grow it long to rebel against the norm. For others, it's like a competition. They grow it as long as they can regardless of whether it looks attractive or not. Or it's a mix of reasons ...
Me? I'm shallow! ;)
I grew it long because it's in fashion (here in the UK) and I think it enhances my looks. The moment it starts to get so long that I think it no longer looks attractive is the moment it gets trimmed back to a more attractive length.
Personally, it was no big struggle for me to grow it. Work is okay with it and I don't give a **** what anyone else thinks. Hair just grows so I grew it. Saves a fortune on paying for haircuts!
But having said that, I do currently hate short hair on guys. I think it looks dead boring. Do you really want to look like everyone else?

Hi there Fork,
What totally AMAZING hair you have!!!
Why do I like my hair long?
The honest answer: I've always wanted to have it that way (even when my dad would not allow me or my brothers to grow it out during the late '60s and early '70s).
From as far back as I can remember, I HATED having my hair cut. I just feel more like "myself" with longer hair, rather than shorter -- the longer it gets, the more I like it! And, conversely: the shorter my hair is, the more miserable I feel...
On the first day in summer, Y2K, I impulsively cut my waist-length hair short... it felt sort-of "fun" for that day only (almost like I was wearing some sort of "new outfit"); but then the full impact of what I had done hit me -- and I've been committed to having long hair for life ever since!
Re. hot summer weather, I twist my hair up in a simple bun, to keep it off my neck, which really keeps me plenty cool & comfortable. Although it's true that NYC is far more hot & humid than where I live (cool coastal Calif. has a lot of summer fog), where my job is located, we regularly get triple-digit temps (and I work in a hot, steamy kitchen)!
That's my suggestion, anyway... You have such great-looking hair -- it would be a shame for you to cut it back to short, in my humble opinion!!!!!!!

I feel the same way too as probably do numerous others on this forum.
