Could anyone give me an idea of when the so-called "awkward stage" begins and ends in terms of hair length?
Also, could someone post a picture or two of a person in the "awkward stage"?
Thanks.
I was in the awkward stage for the first part of 2005. It's when your hair doesn't reach a pony tie. I blogged about it.
Thanks.
That helps quite a bit, I think.
Pretty much what Jason says. From the time when it starts getting in your face/eyes til it can be ponytailed (easily).
Depending on your hairtype and styling, it may get annoying before that, and if you aren't keen on hairties, it will stay annoying til it is long enough to stay behind your shoulders on it's own.
I wore baseball caps for years to keep it out of my face.
Jason probably said it best, but the awkward stage starts when your hair gets too long to hang loose but is too short to tie back. The end point is when it gains sufficient length that you can pull it away from your face and it will remain there either by placing it behind your ears or tying it back. When it starts and ends depends a lot on your hair type, it's growth rate and what kind of haircut you're starting from.
In the interim guys have used all kinds of different ways to keep it under some kind of control with hats, bandannas and gels being the most popular.

I would vote this the best answer, and add that (being older than dirt) when I went through the awkward stage it was almost completely unknown for guys to tie their hair back in a ponytail, so I didn't either.
It was Sly Stallone who made male ponytails acceptable, which is ironic, because he later cut his hair short again. Playing Rambo probably didn't hurt, but he was just an actor, you know? He didn't really run around firing guns at people, LOL!
If anyone says it was Karl Lagerfeld who popularised ponytails, I have to point out that most guys do not think "Oh, a gay fashion designer is wearing that style, so nobody will comment if I do too", LOL! That's with all due respect to my great gay friends here on this board. I think they all have more butch professions than designing frocks. Not that there's anything wrong with that as a way to earn a living. Lagerfeld may have done it before Stallone, but no.
Matter of fact they both had mullets, but they paved the way for real longhairs to tie their hair back.
The awkard stage start at around 6 months of hairgrowth and ends at 18 months. Right now I'm in the early award stage at 7 months from a complete shave. It will be at least another year before my hair reaches shoulder length.
The awkard stage is awkard, it poses a lot of problems to keep your hair nice and neat looking. Women have hair ties, hair clips, and bobby pins. A lot of men though are afraid to rock that stuff in their own hair from a natural insecurity common in most US males.
One advantage of the awkard stage is you can experiment with a lot of different ways to style your hair, so even if you cut it, you can still have a longish hairstyle that works great.
I hope I answered all your questions well.
