Hi Hairy People,
As a follow-up to Kenneth's thread, ("Long hair philosophy?"), I was just remembering the first time I ever stepped foot inside a "Unisex" hair salon...
It was in either 1973 or '74, the year I was briefly living & working in Princeton, NJ (just after turning 20 y/o during the summer of '73, my first year away from living in my home state of Illinois)...
I "needed" a haircut (HA! Now that's pretty funny even typing that word - LOL), and a co-worker of mine recommended the upscale hair salon in downtown Princeton near the University. The place was called, "Unisex Haircuts" (or something similar to that name).
That was the best haircut I have ever had (seriously!) -- the woman who cut my hair had styled it to work with my hair's natural waviness, the goal of that hair salon being to create cuts that were easy to comb in the morning (regardless of the hair's length), without having to do much fussy fixing. That haircut was so excellent, that it lasted for a good 2-3 months (something unheard of by me at that time in my life).
Prior to that Princeton, New Jersey haircut experience, I had only gone to Barber shops (that nasty male-dominated word for "short haircuts only" - LOL)....
Interestingly, when I moved back to the Chicago area about a year later, I experienced my very WORST haircut disaster in a "Unisex" salon that had a very similar name to the Princeton, NJ one.... Hmmm, you would think I should have learned by then that maybe NOT cutting my hair short ever again would be the best solution of all!!!!
Oh, well. That was a long time ago, and I'm often a rather, "late-bloomer!" (LOL)
... Just trippin' down "Memory Lane" a bit!
- Ken
Summer of '73. i had just graduated university. Was in my 1st post school full time job, with a large architectural firm downtown. It was the first summer my hair was shorter than the previous year since 1964. It was mid back length before and now it wa the early 70s , "business" length, stylishly long. (to the shoulders) as I was meeting clients and needed to be "presentable" To that end, my moustache was shortened, loosing the droopy ends and becoming more like the well known 70s "porn Stache" Didn't realise it at the time but I had adopted the look that became known as "Castro Clone" As the 70s continued, My hair did lengthen, and went through several long and (relatively) short cycles. including a perm in the 1979 that had me looking like a twin of Peter Frampton. the 80s, my looked morphed to more Yuppie-ish (or was that 'Guppie" Still long (relative to the standard) but as I was an architect, living in a rehabbed victorian in a historic neighborhood and drove Audis. I fit that strereotype well. Had a fling with longer hair in the early 90s, even had a tail for a while, than back to a "Bi-Level" cut. (Yeah, it was mullet like) Then my Jeff Foxworthy look alike time, followed by deciding almost two years ago to grow it back out, and am now proud to sport a shoulder blade to mid back length tail. I'm home again.
Interestingly, my (male) friend warned me off barber shops a long time ago, even though he's never had long hair.
I actually haven't been near barber shops since soon after that advice, as I found out myself that they weren't very good at listening to instructions.
