Hey there everybody! as some of you may know, i'm growing my hair for about 6.5 months. Over the last 2 months I've noticed that my sides were growing at a faster rate than the back of my head. This happened because when I started growing my hair, it was buzzed on the back and longer on the top/sides. This resulted in an annoying look. I had to put my hair behind my ears all the time or else it looked horrible. Yesterday I visited a hair salon for the first time in my life and got the sides trimmed by a woman. I told her specifically that I want to grow my hair out and didn't want to lose length, just to even it out. After 5 minutes she was done, and I personally couldn't be happier! she did a great job and although messy, it looks much better now. She told also told me something funny and I quote: "Anybody can be a barber, just put a buzzing machine in his hand, it takes an artist to be a hair stylist". Anyway sorry for the long post, but I feel that I had to share. I won't post new pics till March (8 month update)
Yes, good. Keep growing. Cal
Hi unrealxXx,
Well not knowing what your hair looked like before the trim all I can go by is what you are showing now and frankly it looks great! At this juncture I would say just let it grow until you can at least tail all your hair in the back. Then you can decide if any further maintenance needs to be done which also depends on what your goal is. If you are only aiming for shoulder length
then you don't have much further to go but if you want it down your back its best to just leave it alone and not cut it at all.Anyway I'll look forward to your March update my friend.Cheers

Hey there mark, thanks for the kind words. I won't be cutting anymore at least for a year, I just wanted to even it out is all. The stylist didn't even touch the back or top of my head, just the sides. My goal is a bit past shoulder length as pictured above.

I like that !!

That hair stylist is a keeper, she obviously listened to your request very well, and then followed through with style & class -- more hair stylists should be like her!!
When I was first growing my own hair out during the early '90s, I found that occasionally going in for a modest trim and re-shaping / re-styling helped me emotionally make it through the awkward stages. During my 2nd time of growing my hair long (after my infamous devastating short haircut in Y2K), I didn't go in for as many trims or as often or to do much "re-shaping" / re-styling; but that's just because by then I knew what I wanted, and I wanted it long again, and as FAST as possible!!!
Either way you choose, it's all good.
While having what I call, "medium-length" hair (anything longer than the traditional men's short; but not yet long enough to tie into a tail), I can think of several different styles and lengths that I very much remember enjoying at the time. Having a nicely done cut can make all the difference in the world between enjoying your hair growth journey. or just chomping at the bit while trying to endure the awkward stages...
I think you made a wonderful decision, and am so happy for you that the experience turned out so well for you!!

Looks great. Yes, there are stylists who will do what you want. When I went shorter than my aging, ratty terminal length to a shoulder lengthish cut, I found an excellent stylist. They are out there!
