I guess stories like this shouldn't surpise me anymore, but they never fail to make me shake my head and question humanity and its priorities. Sad world we live in.
This part of the story is rather odd: The kid's mother is starting a petition to allow students to grow their hair with the understanding they'll get it chopped for donation. "asks for a hair "donation policy" that would allow students to sign a promissory note with the school, research the cause and keep their hair well-maintained until they cut and donate it. They would then give the school a copy of their donation certificate." What's with that? So if I attend that school, I can only grow my hair if I promise to chop it off and donate it? That is not right.
You're right. Students should be allowed to grow their hair for whatever reason they want. You think they'd at least make an exception though in a case like this. Either way, it's a good thing I don't go to that school or any school with a similar policy, or I'd be on the street looking for a full time job. Damn fascists.
It's a school run not for the benefit of the students, but for profit.
I agree 100% and the fact that this is not occurring in the south, but in Michigan of all places should really alarm anyone and the fact is this boy's Mom started a petition to only allow boys to grow their hair out for donation purposes and cut it after it's grown is ludicrous?
whatever happened to freedom of choice?
why can't the boys wear their hair long as long as they keep it neat?
has America really evolved into the beginnings of a Fascist country?
school age boys fought for the right to grow their hair back in the 1960s, but it seems their efforts have been wasted because schools have decided to mandate a return to the traditional short barbershop haircuts which were fought against in the courts over 40 years ago!!
I hate to say it, but in my opinion we are not evolving as a society, but actually going backwards.
now, the question is how did we become this way?
This is deeply disturbing, on so many levels. The school is operating under blatantly sexist policy. The mother, despite having endured the trials of nearly losing a child to cancer, still fails to fully understand that everyone has a right to fully and uniquely experience the beauty of an authentic life. The boy, though noble of intention, has been duped into thinking Locks of Love is a worthwhile charity.
This is all true, but I doubt you'll convince them of the problems with Locks of Love. I knew a woman who donated her hair to them once, back when we used to go to church, when my wife was into that. She was very religious, and it made her feel good. Plus, she didn't seem very attached to having really long hair, and never grew it back to the same length, so I suppose she would have cut it anyway.
The problem is that Bigotry aganst long haired men is a childish thing and that school board needs to do thier homework and grow up! Did they know that thomas Jefferson had a long long braid and it is on his statue in washington DC. There are many good men with long hair! Even some men in the Bible had long hair Samson, John the Baptist Samual, and others! Did you know that Breagim Young the second leader of the Mormon Church has long hair? The school needs to do thier home work and lossen up on some unproductive rules!

Ok, this school board needs a massive update on this policy. Much more than the mom is petitioning for.
Having said that, LOL its still a scam. I'll donate to them as soon as they agree to donate to all children with cancer, not just girls, don't charge for their wigs based on the income level of the parents (yeah, they aren't completely free), don't sell the majority of the hair they get, oh and in 2009 they made an extra 600 grand over what they gave back... Where did THAT money go?
