Hi guys. So it's been a little over three years since I shaved my head until it was nearly bald. I've only had 5 trims if I remember correctly, the longest trim being about an inch. I feel like it should be longer by now, and it doesn't seem to be growing at a normal rate. I only get trims when I get split ends, and the last couple times I just did myself, since it's long enough now for me to trim without completely f*****g it up. I'm worried I might be nearing terminal length already. Am I just being paranoid? Should I just stop trimming it? Thanks in advance. Regards.
Difficult to know if it is terminal it varies from person to person although it is shorter than many.
Suggest drop the trims for six months and see how you go.
Well I usually wait at least 8 months before trimming again, except one time when it was about 4 months. Oh well, at least I still have hair haha.
Then wait 12, you need to avoid scissors, clippers and razors none are good for hair!
Your hair looks great. You've got tons of volume. You definitely haven't reached a "terminal length". When your hair gets below the shoulders it can seem to be growing slower just because it's long. Hair does tend to grow a bit slower in cool weather months, too. I've no doubt yours can grow much, much longer than this if you want it to.
Brett,
I would say no on the terminal length. Doesn't seem like it's there yet. Also no on the trims. Will never see terminal length if you keep trimming. Let it flow 'n grow!

Hi Brett, with that thickness, there is no way you have reached terminal length. As others have suggested, keep away from the scissors and the floor could be your limit!! Ian
Hmm if you've had 5 trims in 3 years I'd say it's about the right length, your hair seems wavy so I bet it looks a bit longer wet. Everyone's hair grows differently. I have been growing mine for just over 2 & 1/2 years from very short and about 1cm on top in length (just under 1/2 an inch roughly), so not much diferent to your shaved head. Mine's wavy & thick too (see pic) and it seems about the same length as yours. But remember I have only had 3 trims not 5. However you must do what is right for you. Look at Jonalbears hair I bet if you stop the trims it will be like that in a couple more years. You have plenty of growth potential left.
Don't stress too much your hair looks great!

Hi Brett,
I agree with the others, and there is no way that you have reached terminal length, and the best advice I can give is to just stay away from the scissors. With thickness like yours, you should have no problems growing it a lot longer.
Keep it growing,
David
Hi Brett,
If split ends are causing you trouble, maybe try conditioning more often or using a deep moisturizing conditioner every so often? I don't know, by the looks of your hair right now, it looks awesome - I wouldn't worry about a thing ^_~ . I'm sure it'll get longer - can't wait to see it when it does :D !
Sincerely,
yoshiki
Hey Brett, great update! I wouldn't say you are at terminal at and about the right length since you had a few trims at three years growth. My hair is about the same as yours, maybe not as curly, but thick and wavy, and I had a few trims at three years growth too and mine was the same length, check out my picture at three years growth from the Spring of 2010 :) And mine has grown a lot since this picture so no worries!
Yeah, I saw your 4.5 year update photo. Looks really good. And thanks.
Whoa, that's quite the contrast between wet and dry there, Mark! Amazing how much hair there really is inside such long, lush hair... but hey, you can't spell hair without air!
I don't think you've hit terminal length, because I notice that people who have gone terminal long tend to have very thin hair at the ends.
My texture and thickness are a lot like yours (except not quite as thick). Having thick, curly hair makes the hair appear shorter, and sometimes it's hard to tell what kind of growth you're getting.
Keep it well moisturized, and judging from your texture, you could get by with one shampoo a week, and the rest with just water and conditioner. Maybe some oil. Your texture tends to be on the dry side.
Hope that helps.
