Hi all you longhairs,
After some lurking and minor replying, here's my first actual post, to say hi.
Although I had some medium-length to almost chin-length stints when I was younger, I've mostly always had short hair. Two years ago, I quit my 9-to-5 desk job and started my own business as a freelance translator. It was at that point that I figured "Ha! I'm my own boss and I can do whatever I want and I can sit around in my pajamas all day and let my hair grow!" So that's what I did.
Adding to this sentiment of rebellion was another element: I was 28 at the time and I wanted to have long hair before I was 30 and all grown up, so to speak. As far as quarter-life crises go, it was a lot cheaper than buying a red sports car in any case. However, now that I'm actually approaching the big 30 (this summer!), I think that won't be the end of my journey and I just might keep my long hair, because I like it so much.
I'll readily admit that I'm not a "born longhair". Rather, my aims gradually shifted as the seasons changed. My first aim was just to get past the phase where you have to style it with products to make it look decent. Once my hair actually started falling down without being subdued, my next aim was to be able to push it behind my ears - a great milestone! But the annoying part was that it was still so mobile and could only be restrained with baseball caps, headbands and the like. So I thought, wouldn't it be nice to be able to restrain it all at the back? So onward and downward it was, until I reached that second milestone of getting pretty much all my hair in a ponytail.
I am now finally in the comfortable phase of being able to easily restrain my hair in a casual bun or a ponytail when I'm working, while it also looks good when hanging loose, so I'm pleased with my results! I've also found that it looks a lot better now that it reaches well below my chin and brushes my shoulders, which works better with my face proportions than chin-length did.
That's about it. The "after" pictures up there are from my most recent holiday in Malta, and as it turns out, the few times I don't look like a doofus in pictures is when I'm ingesting fluids ;-)
So yea, hi.

HI Mick, welcome to the mlhh even though you've visited us before:)
That's quite a summary of your growing out process and being you
began your journey in your late 20s that isn't too late. Some of the guys
here started their own journey even later in life. For me it was my early 20s
so I've had many years of wearing my mop!lol.I have to say you look great
with the longer locks and would encourage you to consider keeping it for the
long haul.I know people's lives change but their hair really doesn't as long as you
have that burning desire for hair like I do.Anyway thanks for the intro, your cool pics, and please do come back again my friend.Cheers
Mark
That's exactly what I found too. My original goal was to grow it to about chin-length - but then I just kept letting it grow and it looks so much better now it brushes my shoulders.

Welcome
That looks very good idea and certainly suits you.
Cherish for the rest of your life!
I think the length looks great on you. Wearing down looks best to me since you wear it well and ponytails are not so interesting. I have similar length hair and wear it down all the time.
Welcome to the Board!
Now I on the other hand am 57 years old, all grown up so to speak, and my hair is still long.
Has been for alot of years and will remain so for alot more
years.
I started growing it long in school and it's been long ever since.
"Now I on the other hand am 57 years old, all grown up so to speak, and my hair is still long. Has been for alot of years and will remain so for alot more years."
Hehe, you remind me of this GREAT post on the always funny Hyperbole And A Half ;-) Gotta love that blog!
(Not trying to disparage your spelling, it just reminded me.)
The alot.
"...I can sit around in my pajamas all day and let my hair grow!"
Love that attitude, Mick !!
Thanks for the great introduction and welcome to the MLHH...continue having fun with your longhair journey and please stop by often !!

Welcome to MLHH, Mick, and thanks so much for the wonderful introduction and beautiful pics of Belgium, Malta, and your great-looking hair!!!
My personal opinion is that I think your longer hair looks so complimentary & natural on you that I hope it stays a keeper!
In any case, thanks so much for your nice post -- and again, WELCOME!!!

Hi Mick,
Welcome! I think your hair's definitely the keeper-type! Great color and contrast, great shape - I think it suits you much better that the earliest picture of you with short hair... your face is shaped for it - lucky ;) !
I'm 31... not much older than you, but speaking from experience, the real life crises don't begin (a.k.a the mid-life crisis) until your at least 40 - or at least that's what I hear :p (you're too young even for quarter-life crisis ^_~ ). So don't think of cutting off your hair at least until then - I think you'll be happy that you didn't :D !
Keep it growing down and long! Greeting back from the U.S.!
Sincerely,
yoshiki
Thank you everyone for your kind words of welcome!!
A few inches ago, I had no idea that long hair could be such a... way of life, and not just a length of hair.
Anyhow, a few months have passed since those holiday pics in my original post: here's me today - so glad to finally start to feel it brush against my upper back.
Have a great weekend.
Mick
