I just read this article and found it so same-old, same-old in attitude. Man buns, of course, must either be joked about regarding getting in touch with your feminine side or some kind of practicality or, yes, sumo wrestler analogies.
Can't we be allowed to just experiment and enjoy our hair?
The repression of longhaired men continues....
Man Buns in NYTs
Really, you took offence? I've just read it and found it to be a nice, positive article giving men with long hair some welcome attention. And let's face it, can you blame the journalist who had to deliver "500 words on man buns" for including some sumo-wrestling and Hepburn clichés? :)
Yeah--it was Ok but did not represent any progress for our cause. Just more apologetics. It will be nice if we ever get to the point where long hair is just no big deal, period, whether in a bun or worn back or down.
True! Although I reckon the way to that situation will actually be paved in part by articles much like this one.
Acceptance long-haired men is never going to happen in a broad swath the way today's society is... but at least this article sheds some positive light on a subject area a lot of us hold important - from an "outsider's" point-of-view.
I read that feminine line a little differently... I kind'a read it as, "Some people may see long hair on men as being somewhat feminine, but on the flip-side, it is also pretty masculine because..." That's the way I read it at least :p . I wish I could look at that line again, but apparently I have to pay the Times for looking at it so many times ~_~ (yeah, that'll draw in readers :p !).....
Anyways, that's my two cents ^_~ ~
Sincerely,
yoshiki
I didn't really see anything that was too bad in the article. If anything, one person's thought of a ponytail as too "Steven Seagal" was ridiculous, but hey, that's his opinion.
The article even referenced cultures where men regularly wear buns. That's more than what can be said of other articles I've read.
The NY Times article didn't bother me any -- hey, I'm thrilled that somebody FINALLY wrote something on the topic!! Man buns have been around since ancient times -- for as long as history has shown males to be capable of growing their hair long just like females! Although it sounds rather obvious to me that the author of this article was most likely a traditional-thinking short-haired man, I'm OK with hearing his subtle sarcasm, as it makes for a more entertaining read in my opinion.
In fact, reading that article only made me smile... I have my hair tied back in a "man bun" even as I type this... Go ahead & laugh, all you foolish short-haired critics: when the end of the day comes and I undo that man bun, allowing my flowing mane to tumble down my back all the way down to my belt, I know for a fact that this is when many a short-haired man gets very very jealous!
- Ken in San Francisco
This! Exactly. End of the day, pull the hairstick...hair tumbles down...well, lower than Ken's, definitely the end of the day! sometimes I hear gasps, sometimes not. *shrug* And a little head toss so it lies right.
Yeah, how could I forget to mention the head toss? That's usually when I hear a gasp and/or I see a glimmer of jealousy in their eyes! (LOL)
I am a carpenter, so I wear my hair up in a bun most of the time, so it dosent get caught in something & get yanked out, which would be both physically & emotionally painful. Also it keeps people guessing as to how long my hair really is (waist length) And a neat bun stays neater all day than leaving the hair loose. Wayne
And another one taken in by the "Locks of Love" nonsense.
