Hey y'all,
As I've been growing my hair out, I've sometimes felt the sudden urge to cut it because it was bothering me or in an awkward in-between stage. To fight those whims, I looked to men with long(ish) hair in the media for inspiration. So here are some of the men that have "kept me going" (the top pictures), as well as some even longer-haired men that embody my goal for continued growth this year.
Is there anyone you guys look(ed) up to when growing, especially in that awkward pre-shoulder stage?
Mick
and whoops, apparently my pic got shrunk! I swear the font was legible before :)
The top ones are Keith Urban, Taylor Kitsch, Johnny Depp, David Gallagher (that 7th Heaven kid) and Jamie Campbell Bower.
The bottom ones are "non-famous" models.
My inspiration to grow my hair was the Beatles in 1964.
Later on I was inspired by Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders.
There were numerous others that inspired me to keep my hair long.
BTW, their first hit record was in 1961,an instrumental
called "Like, Long Hair."
Hi Mick,
I guess I may be unusual but I have never ever had even the vaguest urge to cut my hair since I started growing it two years ago. The "awkward stage" just made me even more determined to carry on until it got past that stage.
I had short or shortish hair nearly all my life. Been there, done that - and I was bored bored bored with it. I'd had enough of it and no way was I gonna go back. Long hair was just far too exciting!
I thought Noel Fielding's image was pretty cool (pic attached) but of course there are hundreds of others I admire ... but I never needed that as inspiration. I would've wanted long hair anyway - even if I was the only guy on the planet with it. In fact, perhaps I would've wanted it even more!

My inspiration is mainly Ville Valo from the Finnish band HIM or Corey Taylor from Slipknot/Stone Sour.

Hi Mick,
I grew my hair out for the first time in my life in my early 20s.That would be the decade of the 1980s which was when metal went from underground to more mainstream.I can't even count the number of shows I attended at clubs as well as Arenas. One particular longhair that inspired me at the time was Bon Jovi when he was a nobody.I loved his look on his self titled first album.Sadly today he no longer inspires me but when he was starting out he was awesome and I "LOVED" his hair:)Cheers

I liked his older music even when I didn't know what band had written it. So when I found out the name of the band by buying an mp3 player with a pre-loaded playlist that had "War Pigs" on it, I was pretty excited.
Even though I stopped cutting my hair out of laziness, it was easy to blame Ozzy. "I like his style," I said, even having a pair of fluorescent and round-lensed glasses at the time. But over time the style really did grow on me, and he became my formal inspiration.
Hey Pug, not a bad choice, he's funny and quirky and definitely a strong personality - with a nice head of hair!
Hey Mick,
It may be a little corny, but when I think back to when I first wanted to grow out my hair - a young teenager, early '90s, sheltered from the coasts and no real internet or cable TV back then... besides my longhaired friend that first inspired me, the first national/international person of notoriety that kept me pointing towards an eventual goal (I kept a copy of the corny movie on a VHS tape for inspiration) was one of the main characters from the movie "American Cyborg Steel Warrior" (1993). It was a movie that I happened to flick onto the TV at the time, saw the long hair and hurried 'n popped in a tape :p (it eventually got recorded over). I know that's not awkward-stage inspiration, but if you keep on going, you'll eventually get there ^_~ .....
Sincerely,
yoshiki
Hey Yosh, doesn't sound corny at all, and that pic actually looks like what I would (today) consider my ideal length to strive for, so thanks for the inspiration. Sounds like we're not too far apart in age: I was a 1990s teenager as well.
Thinking back to those days, you wanna know something ironic? Back in the day, my group of friends at our local pub basically ALL had long hair, except for me: I had maybe two inches of hair. I was the "mainstream" kid they somehow tolerated. And now the tables have turned: all but one or two of those friends have settled down, become fathers and so on... and cut their hair. And now I have longer hair than several of them combined :-) I guess it really took a long time for their style to rub off on me. Maybe I'm just really slow, haha.
Hi Mick = I've always liked the viking look = like Martin's - Cheers ! :O)
Hey Mick, My primary longhair influence for the past 40 years.
Shawn Phillips, still sporting a tail as he approaches 70.
peace, jonalbear
It's funny, going on this site I expected to find way more metalheads! Or maybe I just haven't spent enough time on here haha. I started growing my hair last August and it's almost past my shoulders now :D My main inspiration is Dave Mustaine. Long live Megadeth!

Hey Nishad, I agree with you: it really struck me too how this place is not all about headbanging and metal. Which I personally think is great, since I don't listen to metal at all, and I was very happy to discover that there were more long-haired people like me, breaking the cliché that anyone with long hair these days is a metalhead.
I really like the diversity on this board. There's hints of hippie, metal, gay, straight, liberals, even the odd tea partier, ... but most of all, LOTS of Average Joes. All in all, the average user of this board is pretty "normal" and not part of some tiny freaky fringe of society, so yay :-)
