I recently went to a restaurant with my g/f and this waitress gave us poor service. Basically, she avoided us and we had to complain to management. He actually said, "We're very sorry about that. Unfortunately people look at your long hair and they assume you will not tip them because you don't have a good job." I thought he had some cojones for even saying that.
I thought about that for a second and asked him if he would serve us. And he did! We had a conversation about my new job in IT and he even comped us a huge dessert. In short, my good personality shone through a potentially awkward situation. And I have a new restaurant!
Now i've never run into that. I've always gotten great service
from the various restaurants around here. And this is with my
long hair, often wearing cut off shorts, jeans with holes in them, farmers overalls or tank tops. It probably helps that at many of these places i'm a regular that goes in there often. But i've also been in restaurants where i'm not a regular and still gotten great service. Part of it too is no matter how
a person is dressed, they may still have alot of disposable income that will be used to tip well. And when I do eat out I do
tip well.
Maybe it's because here on the east coast long haired men have been around for a number of years now.
I've noticed that there are more men with long hair here in New England. I live way up in Northern New England, and a lot of men have beards instead. Interestingly, when I used to live in Berkeley there were lots of long haired men, even men with long dreds.
Upside of a no-tip (aussie) culture I guess, but I have never experienced anything like that.
It could get expensive if you have to prove otherwise repeatedly for the one that does serve you :P
I guess I'm different in a lot of ways. It is good that he served you and treated you right when you brought up the thing with the waitress. But, you're right, he went the distance to have the balls to say what he did to you in the first place. Instead of saying that about what the waitress did initially, he SHOULD have repremanded her for treating a customer like she did--no matter who they were.
Just me, I would never go back in there again, and I would've told him so.
