Hi,
I'm a twenty something muslim born in Britain who is currently growing his hair (7 months roughly). I've been reading through this board and am suprised to read about the amount negativity you guys have experienced whilst growing your hair.
For me, growing out my hair long is considered a good deed and a manly thing to do. This is because I'm imitating the Prophets of God.. Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, Abraham (peace be upon them all).. all of whom are known for their long hair. In their time, long hair was a sign of a healthy, well kept man.
I'd like to share with you some 'Hadith' or narrations/traditions about Muhammad (pbuh) on the subject matter:
[Qatadal asked Anas bin Malik about the hair of Gods's Apostle. He said, "The hair of God's Apostle was neither much straight, nor much curly, it used to hang down between his shoulders and earlobes."]
[Qatada al-Ansari said to the Messenger of God(pbuh), "I have a lot of hair which comes down to my shoulders, shall I comb it? The Messenger of God (pbuh) said, "Yes, and honour it."]
[Ibn Abbas(RA) Narrated the Prophet(pbuh))said: "On the night of my Ascent to the Heaven, I saw Moses who was a tall brown curly-haired man as if he was one of the men of Shan'awa tribe, and I saw Jesus, a man of medium height and moderate complexion inclined to the red and white colors and of lank [Long and lean] hair..."]
[The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived at Mecca on one of his visits having four braids in his hair]
I hope you found that an intresting read. I understand that long hair on men is seen in a similar respect in native-american and japanese culture, its just a shame that the polarity in the western world is often accompanied by ridicule or abuse considering some of worlds most influential men had long hair. Can you think any others?
What an interesting read.....
Thanks for Sharing

Many thanks for a very enlightening insight. In light of that though, I have to say that I'm surprised that more British Muslims do not have long hair. Indeed, I gather long hair on men is frowned upon in many Muslim countries.

Fascinating read. It makes me wonder what the author of I Corinthians Chapter 11 was thinking???? I'm a believer but it's amazing how the Bible contradicts itself. However we must also take into account that these stories mentioned are from the Qur'an. Some believe it, some don't. I've heard my stories on how the book originated but frankly I wasn't there so to prove anything with certainty sounds like a losing battle. One good thing is the Qur'an speaks of long haired Prophets positively (in the original post). Now why though do the typical followers of Islam forbid men from wearing long hair even though the Prophets did and were regarded well for it? Could it be the mainstream followers of Islam are misguided in this area of study? It's odd how Muslims men wear long beards but not long scalp hair. Why is that?
Hi J.M.M.,
Not to get into a debate or anything, but it is also odd how in this day most Christians do not wear their hair long as once Jesus did. It can go both ways, my friend ^_~ ...
Culture develops over time, so unless one truly understands the depth & diversity of a different culture and of the individual minorities within that culture, it's really easy to generalize but hard to get it right. I know you may have been sincere in your question, but is it really our place to ask whether certain people within a religion different than our own are misguided in their ways???
I'm Buddhist, so technically I should have my head shaved :p hah!
Anyways, that's all I'm going to say about that. Peace ^_^ ~
Sincerely,

Yoshiki,
Thankfully in Eastern Orthodox Christianity long hair is mostly encouraged by the clergyman. It's too bad though that they don't try to promote this look to parishioners. Sadly in the end it all comes down to money. If they do something to turn off people (to promote true Orthodoxy) or do something that will make their parishioners potentially less wealthy, it will never be promoted. The bottom line is Orthodox Christians and the Jews are mostly the same. To them money and objects comes first, tradition hypocritically comes first, principle comes second. This is not to say I will never go to such places but truth is I understand their true nature. Very few REAL Orthodox are left in the world.
Hi m111,
Thanks for sharing this :) ! I found this pretty interesting, since I've never read anything from the Qur'an before (I assume this is from the Qur'an?). I find it especially interesting because traditional Islam looked kindly upon longhaired men. I only wish that everyone could do the same in today's society :/ .....
Thank you for teaching me something new today ^_^ !
Sincerely,
yoshiki
Many are shown in my book, Our LONG HAIRitage. In fact people tend to really like the historical section in this highly iluustrated book.
