So my friend (a fellow male long hair) is trying to get a job. His hair isn't merely long (about shoulder blade length), the cut is anything but conservative and with bright blonde streaks (so yeah, not exactly workable for most office environments, he's a graphic designer). He's an asian dude, and he's thinking he wants to get a more conservative looking wig for job interviews. Do any of you have any recommendations for sources for reasonably priced wigs/styles that'd hide this dudes rather unique style, and um any experience with how well this works?
A wig? Now I know you're having a laugh. A wig is spotted a mile off.
Yours truly & best regards
Andy(no wig)
I feel like the reason people think all wigs are bad is all the wigs you notice are bad wigs, otherwise it's just assumed they're real hair. My girlfriend cosplays and so the house is filled with wigs and on her they don't look half bad (admittedly her wigs are mostly fairly long) but they look pretty good on.
A fair point. I just thought a wig to cover long hair seems like the worst option for a job or job interview. What about your friend just tying it back as neat as possible and dying it one colour
Regards,
Andy
Hi Mikael,
Don't worry, the question about wigs have been asked before. Wigs don't work out too well. I'd say if your friend is going to a job interview with some wild hair, I suppose he could do three things:
1: Leave his hair the way it is going into the interview.
2: Dye his hair black and leave it cut the way it is.
3: Both dye and trim up his hair if he wants to make it a bit more conservative. Not the best option, but more what he's looking for, I guess.
...then afterwards re-dye his hair :p !
Those would be my suggestions as I see them. Good luck to him and good question :) ! Best wishes ^_^ ~
Sincerely,
yoshiki
I'm not sure a wig would be a viable option. Perhaps a better choice would be to use a temporary dye to remove the streaks and then maybe use gel and tie his back assuming it's not a real radical cut. Now if we're talking along the lines of a severe undercut which would be even more evident pulled back then maybe a wig would be a better choice, though a wig will likely always look unnatural.

No undercut, just spiky and weird... very uh, Japanese rock guy. It'd probably be ok if he didn't spike it up so much. He's a graphic designer and I think they might be allowed to have weird hair, but I wouldn't know, I haven't worked a straight job since I was 18.
I guess the first quetion i'd have to ask is this really a good
idea? AFter all the secret will get out pretty quick. Like when
you stop outside of the building and a strong gust of wind
blows the wig off. Or you go into a store without the wig
and run into your boss/a co worker? If the wig screams out "wig?"
Now i'd also point out as a graphic designer he may not hit much
resistance about his hair. Graphic designer is one of those jobs
that may be lenient with hair rules, especially if he is a great
graphic designer.
Considering that he does design work he would be working primarily from home, but yeah frankly I think if he's working for a hip company (where frankly he belongs) his hair shouldn't be a problem (and it's clear arty/stylin-ness might actually help get him hired as it pretty clearly shows he's an 'art guy' as in creative and weird and whatnot) and not all wigs look unnatural, as I said earlier, my girlfriend does cosplay and burlesque and so she has wigs aplenty that look pretty good, but I do see how men's wigs might not look as good.
Still figured I'd try and help out my bro.
Wearing a wig can be spotted easily and just screams out to the observer "hey I'm hiding something".
The only way a wig can not look, well, like a wig, is for it to be one that's expensively made and expertly chosen and customized to the wearer. On top of that they're itchy. You wouldn't want to wear one 40 hrs/wk to work if you can at all avoid it.
