Hey guys, haven't posted on here for a few years or so but man did I get pissed off this afternoon when I was channel surfing and saw them cutting long hair off on the Rachael Ray show for more of those dubious donations. Pantene is doing a big donation/change your hair style push, making April 27 "National donate your hair day". (pffft)
They had 3 women with almost waist length hair. The first had curls that most women would become serial killers to have. The second had the "I'm an ex-hippie who never does anything with my straight hair look". The third had nice looking but way over processed/dyed black hair and who's husband wanted it gone.
All of them thought they were doing some kind of great donation to a needy cancer patient but obviously had never read the donation requirements posted on Pantene's own website. So, after watching them take all their hair back to shoulder length by some celebrity hair dresser and then dressing them up like fashion models (2 of them at least) complete with pro makeup, etc., the transformation was complete...complete bull. If they had done a fashion makeover before chopping their hair the transformation would have been just as dramatic. The curly hair girl lost all her looks in my opinion.
So, here is what I posted (which doesn't seem to have been allowed by their post screener):
-------------
"Wow, what a waste. All of those women looked perfectly fine and if they would have dressed them up the same without cutting their hair it would have been obvious. You would think that the producers would do a little homework when putting together a show like this but if they did they would have noticed some kind of important details. On Pantene's own donation website it says
this:
"To be made into a wig, your hair must be: Free of permanent color, bleach or other chemical treatments... but virgin hair is preferred. No more than 5% gray."
Does anyone believe that any of those women who let them chop off their hair had hair that wasn't dyed or otherwise "virgin"? How about the dark haired woman who's hair "stands straight up" due to being so worked over? (not to mention that after cutting off her wrecked ends there would be considerably less than the 8" required) All of those women were of an age to have grey hair coming in if not very prominent.
So, are we seeing a shameless promotion or just an effort to get women to do away with long hair styles for no actual good reason (hair in the trash is no good reason if you really think it's getting donated to needy people).
For another example, since Locks of Love is often the go-to example for hair donations, here is some stuff you need to know about them before altering your body:
Locks of Love only uses about 3% of the hair donated for wigs. The rest is either sold for profit or "disposed of". Grey hair or hair less than 10" is sold by them. Girls under 6 receive synthetic hairpieces. Locks of Love cannot link donors to recipients. Long hair is considered by them to be only for girls because as they put it, "it is socially acceptable for young men to have short, shaved, or even no hair". They only make a small number of wigs a year and often charge the families they are "donating" them to. As a charity bringing in over $250k they are required to make a public accounting for their activity on request but don't.
Much of this info is from their own website.
Do your homework people. There's nothing at all wrong with keeping and enjoying your own long hair, don't let people push you into something you don't want to do (I say this because there are a lot of self-appointed people who go around doing this...and often because of shows like this)."
---------------
So in response to this continuing effort to disparage long hair styles, I'm declaring that April 27th is also now "WORLD PLEDGE TO KEEP YOUR HAIR LONG DAY". I will be posting this to my website this weekend.
For those who just like the idea of helping others (which is a good thing), don't get upset at me, I'm only showing that wasted effort isn't really a useful effort and my role is the counter-effort to the big business of cutting hair.

I can't stress enough how I hate these makeover shows.Grrrrr.Especially
when part of it includes butchering someone's beautiful longhair whether
it be of a male or female. In this case thankfully they didn't snag some unsuspecting
longhaired men to hack up.Being we are in such a minority anyway that would have been a major lose if these three were guys.l'll never understand how people
fall for this donation crap! It's not like the donation will cure the cancer anyway. And like you noted some wigs are done with synthetic hair anyway which
I'm sure is made by the tons in China!Anyway thanks for that story and I'm not sure yet if I'll watch that video clip.

Good to hear from you. Don't be a stranger!
I hate makeover shows. It always involves cutting hair. Excellent response to the program.
Have you noticed that guys who push the idea of getting hair cut short are also the guys who haven't figured out to comb their hair
in the morning?
If you have "bed head" I don't want to hear hair styling advice from you.
I've heard that long haired guys don't get bed head... is that because once the hair reaches a certain length it'll stay down by itself?
Rachel Ray is an out of shape woman who cannot cook! I cannot believe she is still on TV. Why doesn't she loose 15lbs and make herself over?
got me riled up. A few days ago a male contestant with gorgeous waist length red hair had it cut off for one of those hair charities on that show. I flipped the channel. I could not bear to watch it.
I have a better (and very original) idea regarding donating hair. Why not donate shed strands? I have an acrylic plastic box containing enough hair for maybe 2 long hair wigs. Problem solved. It is like having your cake and eating it too.

I saw that You want to be a millionair show when this guy got his gorgeous hair cut off for donation. noooooooooooooooooooooo!
