Does anyone else have haircut nightmares? I started growing my hair at 13 and I'm 19 now, so literally my entire adolescence has been spent on all this hair, which is easily my dominant feature.
Every now and again I'll have nightmares that it all just gets cut off and all the years of hair growing are pretty much undone in a few seconds. I'm probably weird for thinking this lol. Just wondering if anyone else has, too.
Is there anything going on which threatens the well-being of your hair, such as a friend, family member, etc. who is pressuring you to cut it off, or an activity you engage in regularly that could damage your hair? Or have you cut your hair in the past and regretted it horribly? If so, I'd say the nightmares are justified because they are serving as a defence mechanism to make you aware of the threat and certain to avoid it. But if there is no factual foundation for your nightmares, you should probably seek out therapy because that sounds like an unhealthy phobia.
Your hair may be your most dominant PHYSICAL feature - but your real most important feature is your MENTAL one: your obvious intelligence. Concentrate on that and let your hair take care of itself.
And stop having nightmares. Nothing is going to "cut off" your intelligence no matter what happens to your hair. ;)

Hey Dylan, you are not alone. Three days ago I had a hair cut nightmare. In my dream, someone cut the front part of my hair, like the bangs area. I pretty much detest having bangs, and someone grabbed the front part of my hair and chopped it off. It looked like I had a buzz cut in the front, while the rest of my hair was still long. It was horrible. I still haven't recovered from it. I guess my fears is having my bangs area cut or having someone do layers in my hair. ugghhh It is my biggest fear because the front part the head is usually the hardest to grow out long because it seems like it grows slower then the rest of my hairs. Thanks for sharing your dream, and thanks for letting me vent out on my dream.
peace out,
rowie
If your read this site you soon learn that this type of nightmare
is very common. Scary but common.
Hi Dylan,
First of all, no, you are not "weird' for having the haircut dreams you've had recently; but, neither should you simply stay in fear of having these nightmares just continue on & on forever, either. You have the right to have a calm peace of mind at night, and to live a happy, primarily fear-free life, whether daytime or nighttime. But, as the old saying goes, if you keep having recurring nightmares (about ANYthing -- whether hair-realated, or not), then you might want to do some serious soul-searching to see what you might need to alter in your thinking in order to be freer from these fears.
I'm not saying I'm "perfect" at doing this sort of emotional homework myself; but whatever it takes -- be it God, religion, yoga, meditation, or simply a 12-step program of some kind -- facing down a subconscious fear like this will free you up enough to stop the recurring nightmares, and give you the serenity to replace the fears with.
I have a lot of friends in AA or other 12-step programs; so have a lot of appreciation for their "Serenity Prayer" -- it goes something like this:
"Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can, -- and the wisdom to know the difference."
To my way of thinking, the above "prayer" can apply just as easily to Hair as to anything else in life that we need to feel more at peace about. The above concepts have certainly helped me in my own personal life in many different ways; so I hope you'll find it maybe a bit helpful to you, too!!
All the Best,
Ken in San Francisco
For some reason, it has been a long time since I've had a hair nightmare...but then I never got a lot of harassment for long hair. Which is not that I don't have nightmares...although, now that I am supervising rather than driving transit my brain has done a weird thing...I still have bus/streetcar accident dreams...but as the passenger now! And oh man that takes the edge off!
Really, any thing in your life you are seriously concerned about is likely to show up in your dreams.
Hi there Trolleypup,
So true, I agree with the point you just made, above. Interesting (and scary!) to think about your street car accident dreams - YIKES!! As a regular MUNI passenger myself, I'm grateful to report that I have not yet had any of those kind of nightmares; but with you working there, I can understand it being more on your mind.
Re. hair dreams, I've definitely had them; but usually wake up finding them to be a bit funny. Before I succeeded at growing it long, my dreams included having it long; once it got long in real-life, I'd occasionally had dreams that I cut it back to short & regretted it (which DID really happen in Y2K, of course; but that's another story - LOL)....
My favorite hair dream of all time happened a couple of years ago:
In my dream I was back in college or Senior year in high school (undetectable which one), and upon entering the school lunch room, I looked in the mirror to see a much younger, slimmer, handsomer me with a nice-looking "medium-length" hairstyle. I remember saying to myself in this dream, "Well, I definitely want to grow it out much longer than this; but for now, at least I look good!"
Re. nightmares, however...
I used to have nightmares about my dad after he died in '76. He was unpleasant enough when he was alive (an understatement - LOL); so having him re-visit me in my dreams was NOT a welcome-mat kind of thing. Over time (and occasionally a bit of professional help, like some therapy), the nightmares gradually softened to the point of being just occasional dreams that included him. The last 2 dreams I had about him were very healing & very positive -- and I haven't had any dreams about him ever since (the last dream being around 1987)!
OK, I've blabbed on enough now.... Time for me to get off this computer!

Hi,
You are not crazy for having these dreams. Like Sören said, these dreams could be caused by the things that people say about your hair, and the pressure that people might push on you to cut it. Even if your family is supportive of your hair, there are always people that criticize long hair (bosses, media, etc.), so I think this is a legitimate concern.
Don't worry about losing your hair. Once you come to the realization that you have long hair and that it is not going anywhere, I think these dreams will go away. That is just my guess.

Ugh... don't remind me. Woke up yesterday at around 3:00 hyperventilating because I had a dream that the principal pulled me out of class and forcibly gave me a haircut.
And whenever somebody says something about my hair,, I usually get very jittery. Especially if anyone that isn't that close can overhear.
I wouldn't say I've ever had a nightmare per-se about haircuts. I think the closest thing I've dreamt about that involved hair cutting was I joined the USMC and they shaved me bald when I arrived at boot camp.
