A deputy manager was inspecting our ID badges at work today. The pic on mine is five years old and of course shows me with the short hair I had then. The deputy manager is quite young but she is very conservative and old-fashioned - a real corporate type - so her comment blew me away when she inspected my ID badge.
She looked at me and simply said "I much prefer your hair now. You look so much nicer with long hair. It really suits you."
I was so surprised all I could mutter was "Thanks!"
Encouragement from an unexpected quarter. She was the very last person I would expect a comment like that from but I guess you should never ever judge people just by appearances. You never know what they're really thinking.
It made my day! :)

Good to hear some people are open minded especially in the corporate arena. :)
Quite cool!!
Great story! Congrats on the comment..I bet that made you feel good. Here's another one..hair is looking good man! Like your browns :)
It should make your day.
And she was absolutely right!
Hi Damon,
That is wonderful news, and cheers to you! Good luck to you on your continuing long hair journey!
Keep it growing,
David
Thanks for all the comments, guys! What made her comment especially amazing is that I always wear my hair loose at work the same as I do anywhere else. I've never bothered with a ponytail or a bun since I don't like that look. It is pretty much as in the pic but I do at least make an attempt to brush it for work so it's not QUITE as much of a mess! :)
I think the whole point of having long hair is to show it off. It seems a bit counterproductive to pull it all back in a ponytail and the style is also incredibly unflattering to the face. You might as well have a buzzcut from every angle but the back. I guess it's okay if you have a really great face but I don't!
Hey, I figure if the girls with long hair don't have to put it in a ponytail at work, why should I?

Hey Damon,
I do agree with you that wearing ones longhair loose is preferable over having it restrained all the time.Problem is once you grow it really long or work in an environment that is not longhair friendly you just have no choice but to tie it up.By not longhair friendly I mean if you work outdoors in the weather or in a physical type of job like a mechanic. If you work in an office situation then sure, have your hair happy and loose:)Cheers

Yup, I totally agree with you, Mark. There are many jobs or situations where long hair worn loose would not be practical.
Of course, hair style may also be dictated by corporate policy. In addition to manual jobs, there are also many offices that are not longhair friendly either. I'm very lucky in that my office is fine with it but I know many other offices would not be.
It is also influenced by the professional image that you yourself may wish to project - even if you are self-employed.
But I would personally wish to avoid having a ponytail unless it was absolutely necessary. That's one reason I wouldn't want my hair very much longer than it is now.
