What is the general consensus about goatees, beards, etc. that go grey or white quite a bit ahead of the hair on your head? My hair is naturally red, but has turned blonde because of all the grey mixed in. I've just started growing my goatee into a full beard and I really like it. But it's totally white. Does it look bad?

OKCdude.
The white goatee is a defining feature. Let it grow!

Forget general consensus. Your goatee looks great. I have the same situation. My short beard and stash are white, but my hair, at age 77, refuses to turn grey. I wish it were silver, but I know this is genetic. I am overdue to post some new photo, but check me out about 4 years ago. At this point, were I you, I'd use a silver rinse to bring your hair into closer tonality to your beard.

Forget general consensus. It is your hair, you are the final
decider of how to wear it. I think it looks great.
You look distinguished and enjoy the change.
The trick is to keep it white, but ALWAYS keep it trimmed very, very close. Long and white, not so good dude, unless you are looking for that seasonal job as Santa at the mall.
I have to disagree. Long and white would look just as good with the long hair.

Your beard looks great, OKCdude!
Keep it long enough that it doesn't look like stubble, though. White stubble seems to emphasize the imperfections in your face, and as old guys, our faces are not pristine.
As for going for a long gray beard, plusses are that it's uncommon (if you don't want to be one of the herd), it blows in the wind (which we all know looks and feels awesome!), it doesn't scratch your husband's or wife's face, and people tend to remember you more. Minuses are what you usually hear about long hair - that it's not as "clean" or "neat" looking to people who mistakingly find long hair to not have those attributes. Also, you can't hide a long with a ponytail or whatever. It's there right up in front, dude. Everybody immediately sees it, and many will categorize you as a long-bearded guy instead of as a longhair.
As for food, a long beard catches more, but your shirt will catch less. And you can't picnic in the wind unless you like hair in your food, but if you have long hair, you live with that already.
But go for and enjoy the beard you want. After all, as we say here often, it's YOUR HAIR.
Bill
It looks great especially with the long hair.
...go with the white goatee....looks fantastic !

Looks good the way it is.
Okay, here's the deal. My wife, Pam and I have been married for nearly 27 years and she loves me with facial hair. She likes the goatee (stache and chin only), but has seen me in a full beard several times and likes that, too. Doesn't care which one, but really gets into one or the other. Trouble is, it used to be deep red. Now that it's white, I'm just experimenting on which looks best on me, especailly with the hair the length that it is.
Steve
Looks fine to me
I personally think having a white beard with darker hair looks quite distinguished. Willie Nelson is a great example of how having a white beard and brown reddish hair can look excellent. Your own hair and beard combo look great. Keep it as it is.

Hi Steve,
You have nice wiskers! I say forget about all the consensus and go with what your instincts tell you. I personally would embrace the silver because it is natural. Silver is amazing and I hope my hairs can turn out as silver as yours! I'm guessing maybe not cause I'm "ethnic." hahaha The grass will always be greener on the otherside. Still whatever you choose, you will always look fabulous. Thanks for keeping us updated Steve.
cheers,
rowie
Give it go Steve, and see if you genuinely like it. Looks like you're off to a good start.

I don't think it looks bad at all. If you like it, then keep it and enjoy. My beard will go white, before my hair. I am 44 years old and I can already tell. I am not going to dye my hair or beard. It is a decision that I have already made.
