My last haircut left one side about one half inch shorter than the other. So essentially only 1/3 of my hair is at its full length right now.
Should I get another haircut to fix it up while im at it (and to get rid of the god awful bob shape?)
Or should I fix that in a year's time when my hair is past my shoulder?
Hi Matt, Hair grows unevenly anyway, so it may well be better to leave it to grow longer before considering trimming. Regards, Ian

Asymmetry has plagued me in the past. Hair can grow faster on one side of your head. My hair was longer on the right in 2004. (see photo) This has since corrected itself.

Scott, you have fantastic hair. Keep it up. It's always a pleasure to look at your hair for inspiration! Rock on man! If I ever reach your length, my fantasy is to be bad for only 1 day and go to a salon and have them blow dry my hair straight like yours. Then I'd go to a park and wear my hair loose and straight and have people just gawk at me. I know i'll probably deal with lots of tangles by the end of day. Still, I think it would be worth it for me to do for only a day. ;-P

Dear Matt,
Do you normally sleep on your side when in bed resting?
My left part of my hair is a bit longer then the right side. I have always slept on my side at night-time and think maybe the slight difference in size may have been due to sleeping more on a particular side?
Just a theory for what it's worth.
cheers,
Duncan
Dear Matt and Duncan,
Do you guys sleep with a braid or some kind of protective do? If Duncan's theory holds true, then maybe it would be time to explore doing some protective styles like braiding the hair loose to lessen breakage and tangles. hmmm Just a thought, I started to notice less shedding or breakage when I sleep with a loose braid. I move a lot in my sleep so I don't think I would have a dominant side of where I would put pressure on my head.
best,
rowie
Dear Matt,
I have always worn my hair loose to bed. I tuck my hair behind my ears and let it spread out behind. I use a SATIN PILLOW case which is much friendlier on long hair. The satin material helps avoid the hair being caught and ripped on the more conventional cotton ones. I am the opposite to you moving very little during sleep, and have the ability when turning over during sleep time to move my hair with my hand, tucking it behind and then seconds later returning to sleep on my side. Probably in your case tying it back in a loose braid or tail would work well for you as you report tossing and turning more.
PS I noticed that the side of my hair which is slightly shorter is the dominant side of my head that i tend to sleep on more.
This would be interesting to compare with beards especially as beards grow in the centre of the face and not just the sides.
Cheers,
Duncan
My mane has been at terminal for ten years and my beard has been for about four. Through all this time, the left side of both has been longer than the right side. This is normal for people with terminal hair, but it can look like a hatchet job on someone who gets haircuts.
My question would be, if you're growing your hair out, why are you still getting haircuts? Normally men quit getting haircuts when they are growing their hair longer, especially if they have to get through the awkward stage. They want to get through this stage as quickly as possible, and haircuts slow down the process. Since the awkward stage looks messy anyway, I'd opt for just letting the hair you have to shorten that state, but it's your hair and you have do decide whether you want to look a bit messier for a short time or a bit less messy for a longer time.
Without a straight-on photo that shows your hair combed and all your face, anyone can only offer advice on conjecture. How it all plays together matters. If it looks so awful that you don't want it getting onto the Internet, then yeah, you need to do something about it. Otherwise, probably not.
